Hogan was a veteran of World War I and had served alongside Major Ben McBride, whose life he saved. During McBride's expedition into Caprona to find Bowen Tyler, Hogan served as the mechanic and gunner of McBride's plane. After the plane crashed during an attack by a pterodactyl, Hogan remained with the downed aircraft to repair it. He got it fixed just as McBride, Charlotte Cunningham and Dr. Norfolk came running up with Ajor, and thanks to Hogan's mechanical knowhow McBride was able to fly them safely back to the Polar Queen.
