Fletcher was a store owner in Iping. He disapproved of holiday making and spent Whit-Monday whitewashing his store's ceiling. When Thomas Marvel came into town, Fletcher found him such a striking figure that he accidentally allowed some of his paint to run down over the sleeve of his shirt.
