When [[Jaffers, Constable|Constable Jaffers]] claimed to have been confronted with an invisible assailant in the [[Lion's Head Inn]], Bird immediately decided the entire thing was a hoax. He went personally to the Lion's Head and interviewed all of the patrons and townspeople who claimed to have encountered the unseen criminal. When none of them - including Jaffers - could produce a shred of evidence, Bird declared it all a hoax. He was quickly proven wrong when the [[Invisible Man, The (Universal Monsters I)|Invisible Man]], made his presence at the meeting known, first throwing a bottle of ink into the astonished inspector's face, then strangling him and finally killing him by bashing him over the head with a barstool.
