Jumanji was a cursed board game, whose origins are likely from somewhere in 19th-century Africa (judging from the tone of the game and the environment within it). The game has the ability to either create the game's situations in reality, or to pull the players, upon a penalty, into its own reality.

The world within the game resembles an African jungle, populated with malevolent plant and animal life, including a stereotypical Victorian-era British game hunter, Van Pelt. Cheating in the game is punishable by transformation into a small primate.

When the game is completed, reality will reset itself back to the point when the game was begun, undoing all the havoc it has wreaked. The events that transpired since the game was begun are only remembered by the players who started the game, not later, additional players or anyone else.
