Biography

Lucifer was the second Archangel created long before humanity but some time after the creation of Leviathans. Michael was the eldest and most loyal of the Archangels to God while Lucifer was the favorite of God. Raphael and Gabriel were the younger brothers of Lucifer. Lucifer was according to Michael practically raised by the elder Archangel and loved him, even when Lucifer would betray them, a parallel of Sam and Dean's brotherly relationship. God eventually created humanity on Earth and they became his new favorite creations which enraged Lucifer and went to Michael to stand with him again God but Michael refused and Lucifer rebelled against God and was cast down to Earth. Once on Earth Lucifer came into contact with Lilith and twisted her into the first demon. As a result God had Michael cast Lucifer into Hell within a special cage with 600 seals guarding it but only requiring 66 to be broken to free Lucifer, Lilith being the final of these seals. Lucifer's banishment resulted in God out of grief leaving Heaven. Though Lucifer was sealed away an ancient prophecy foretold that he would be awoken and start the Apocalypse with it ending in a destructive show down between him and Michael within their destined respective vessels Sam and Dean Winchester.

In 1972 a demon named Azazel who has been wondering the desert for centuries for a means of raising Lucifer comes across a convent where the cage door is located. Azazel then kills multiple nuns and uses one as a means of allowing Lucifer to contact him. Lucifer then tells Azazel to raise Lilith who can break the seals. He also tells Azazel to bring him a child and infuse demon blood within their body. Though Lucifer meant and always knew it would be Sam Winchester he withheld this from Azazel.

At some point when Lilith was raised from Hell by Azazel, at the cost of his life, she set up Ruby to train Sam to use his demon powers to become strong enough to kill Lilith when the time was right. When Dean was killed and dragged to Hell, the endless torture from Alastair temporarily transformed Dean into a demon who broke the first seal in Hell.

In "Sin City" Lucifer's existence is first revealed by the demon Casey who reveals that demons have a belief system in a higher power like humans do with God but they believe in Lucifer instead.

In "Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester" the angel Castiel reveals to Dean that the angels are on Earth for the first time in 2000 years because Lilith is breaking the seals to release Lucifer from Hell.

In "Lucifer Rising" Sam and Ruby set out to kill Lilith and stop the raising of Lucifer using Sam's demon powers. Sam succeeds in killing Lilith but as she is the final seal her blood forms into a door and Ruby reveals her true allegiance to Lucifer and that Lilith is the final seal. Dean then shows up and kills Ruby but too late to stop Sam and Lucifer is freed in a large beam of light as a roar can be heard.

In "Sympathy for the Devil" Sam and Dean are transported from the convent and onto a plane by God as Lucifer rises in a beam of light that destroys the town. Lucifer unable to possess Sam instead goes to his plan B and possesses a man named Nick, appearing to him as he deceased wife Sarah who was murdered and tells Nick and convinces him to become his temporary vessel.

In "Free To Be You And Me" Lucifer appears to Sam in a dream as his deceased girlfriend Jessica and gains his trust. Lucifer then appears again but near the end of the dream appears to Sam as himself, through Nick, and reveals Sam to be Lucifer's chosen vessel. Though Sam refuses Lucifer tells him that it will eventually happen.

In "The End" Dean is transported to an alternate post-apocalyptic future where Sam said yes to Lucifer and Dean said no to Michael and without anyone to stop him, Lucifer has spread a virus that has transformed the remaining humans into demons. Dean teams up with a future version of himself to take him on with the Demon killing Colt. However Lucifer, in Sam's body, kills future Dean and tells his story to the past Dean and vows that no matter what Dean decides or alters, they will both end up where they are with Dean dead and Sam possessed.

In "Changing Channels" the Archangel Gabriel reveals to Sam and Dean that the reason Sam and Dean are the vessels is because of how similar their back stories are, Michael and Dean as a loyal father to God and John Winchester while Sam and Lucifer are rebellious of their respective father's plans.

In "Abandon all Hope..." Lucifer intends to raise Death himself and proceeds to a Carthage to raise him. Meanwhile the demon Crowley, who took possession of the Colt, gives it to Dean to kill Lucifer with it believing that Lucifer will destroy demon kind once humanity is destroyed. Sam, Dean, Ellen and Jo Harvelle and Castiel then head out to kill him but are faced with Meg and a hang of Hellhounds while Lucifer captures Castiel and attempts to gain his allegiance but is unable to, even with Meg's persuasion. Sam and Dean eventually get out, when Ellen and Jo give their lives, and shoot Lucifer with the Colt but it fails, Lucifer explaining that he is immune to the Colt and then proceeds to further note the similarities between Sam and himself. Lucifer then succeeds in raising Death and binding him but looses Sam and Dean when Castiel rescues them.

In "The Song Remains the Same" Sam and Dean travel back in time to stop the angel Anna Milton from killing Mary Winchester to prevent the birth of Sam to derail Lucifer's plan, only to be stopped by Michael himself. Michael then tells Dean how he still considered Lucifer a brother despite what he had done, paralleling again the similarities between the angels and the Winchesters.

In "Hammer of the Gods" Lucifer himself arrives at a motel with various Pegan Gods such as Odin, Kali and Ganesh and proceeds to slaughter them all because of his deep hatred for them, even more than humans. Lucifer eventually finds Sam and Dean there and tires to kill Kali but Gabriel interferes and Lucifer painfully kills him, showing great remorse in doing so. However a tape from Gabriel reveals that the Four horsemen's rings are the key to unlocking Lucifer's cage.

In "The Devil you Know" Lucifer's plan for killing humanity is revealed to be dispersing the virus to wipe out humanity. In "Two Minutes to Midnight" Sam, Dean, Bobby Singer, Castiel and Crowley team up to stop the shipment of the virus and obtain Death's ring. Sam, Booby and Castiel manage to stop the virus while Dean and Crowley obtain Death's ring as he gives it to them. Sam eventually comes to the plan of saying yes to Lucifer and allow him in but Sam will jump into the cage and trap them both.

In "Swan Song" Sam and Dean storm Lucifer's home in Detroit and Sam says yes to Lucifer but fails to stop him and Lucifer, within Sam, escapes. In an unknown location Lucifer then talks to Sam and torments him about how it was always meant to be. Lucifer even reveals that Azazel had his closest friends and teachers possessed to keep an eye on him. The next day at a cemetery in Lawrence Lucifer meets with Michael, possessing Sam's half brother Adam, and tries to reason with Michael into not fighting out of brotherly love. However Michael refuses having orders but as the two prepare to fight, Dean shows up with Bobby and Castiel the latter of whom throws a molotov of holy fire at Michael to give Dean time to get through to Sam. However this action enrages Lucifer who obliterates Castiel, snaps Bobby's neck before pounding Dean to the edge of death but Sam is able to regain control and uses the rings to open the gate, pulling Michael/Adam into the pit with him and re-sealing Lucifer away. Sam however is raised out from Hell by a resurrected Castiel.

In season 6 the Archangel Raphael plans to release Michael and Lucifer from the cage to restart the Apocalypse, but is stopped when Castiel destroys him after becoming the next God. Sam's soul is revealed to have been trapped in Hell while his body emerges but has been tormented by Lucifer for the whole time. However Sam is eventually able to get his soul back in one peace again.

In season 7 "Meet the New Boss" Lucifer reappears to Sam as a hallucination, in Nick's form, claiming that Sam is still in the pit. In "Hello Cruel World" Lucifer continues to torment Sam and tries to twist him into killing himself multiple times. Lucifer even appears to Sam as Dean claiming to have a lead on the new Leviathan threat and leads him to a warehouse where the real Dean shows up and manages to get Sam back in control. When Sam and Dean are badly wounded by the Leviathan Edgar, Lucifer appears to Sam in the ambulance admitting that he isn't real but isn't going anywhere.

In "Repo Man" Sam eventually tired of ignoring him allows Lucifer back in and continues to torment him, even works with him on a case but Lucifer then reverts back to tormenting him. In "Born-again Identity" Lucifer appears to Sam so intensely that he is unable to sleep and is eventually hit by a car and taken into a hospital ward were Lucifer continually torments him in multiple ways excessively to the point where he is almost dead. However a resurrected Castiel transfers his illness to himself, thus making Castiel see Lucifer instead. In "Reading is Fundamental" Sam uncovers the Leviathan tablet, the effects of which cause Castiel to no longer see Lucifer but leaves him in a broken state.

Overview

Personality and attributes

While Lucifer seeks to eradicate mankind like most interpretations of the Devil, this version is described by many characters as a "bratty child" having a "temper tantrum". As an Archangel Lucifer possesses many powers such as immunity to any conventional weapons and even the power of other Gods and his younger Archangel brothers. Lucifer's only two weaknesses are his older brother Michael who can kill him, and the Cage which can re trap him. Lucifer himself can be seen to be both sneaky and deceptive with a twisted sense of humor, much like Loki of Norse mythology. Despite his betrayal Lucifer himself does still love his brothers as seen when he griefs shortly after killing Gabriel and kills Castiel out of anger when the angel uses holy fire to banish Michael on the chosen battlefield. Though Lucifer was more appeasing to Sam, both because of their similarities and because he was his designated vessel, but had little patience for Dean, even beating Dean to death slowly whereas he simply killed Castiel and Bobby with the snap of his fingers.
