Templemir is a city that features in Captain Nemo and the Underwater City.

Overview

The city of Templemir was created in the 19th century by the infamous Captain Nemo and made use of the advanced technology that he had used to construct the Nautilus. Instead of being a traditional settlement, the city of Templemir was in fact located far below the waters and on the ocean's floor which meant that it was only accessible by submarine. Captain Nemo intended it to be a shelter for him and his followers so that they could leave a Utopian lifestyle without any involvement with the outside world. During the construction of the city, an accident emerged that resulted in the creation of a massive mutated Manta Ray-like creature known as Mobula that prowled the depths of the ocean. A critical part of its construction was an underwater farm which helped feed the inhabitants. Furthermore, there was a special machine that produced oxygen and freshwater for the city which also produced a byproduct that was gold which was seen as being worthless to the inhabitants due to the fact that it was so readily available. As it was a non-corroding material, it was used as plating for the rest of the city giving it the illusion of it being made of gold. A sophisticated life support system kept the domed city's population alive and a key construction area known as the Forbidden Area maintained a bay for another submarine designated Nautilus II. Captain Nemo was the ultimate head of the settlement but his close second in command Joab also had a part to play in these events.

After its completion, the existence of Templemir remained secret to the world except for Captain Nemo and those that chose to remain within it. Nemo himself had little desire to make contact with the nations of the Earth on the surface as he feared that mankind would use his ideas to simply bring about the escalation of conflict such as those that were plaguing the North and South of America. In the 1870's, New York State Senator Robert Fraiser was being sent by the United States government to Britain in order to dissuade Europe from providing arms to the South. However, the ship that was carrying him was wrecked at sea leaving Fraiser, Mrs Helena Beckett along with her son Phillip Beckett, Mr Lomax and Barnaby Bath with his brother Swallow Bath the only survivors from the deadly storm. Though they managed to reach the lifeboats, their escape seemed doomed as the ship was sinking though they were rescued when suddenly frogmen emerged wearing advanced diving gear. These strangers took the survivors to the Nautilus where they were brought before Captain Nemo himself who expressed his distaste in the rescue though stated that the alternative was to let them drown in the waters. After the rescue, Captain Nemo stated that he had no desire to return the people to their homes or their destination despite the urgency of the New York Senators mission. Instead, he plotted the course of his ship to his underwater home of Templemir; a wondrous sight to those who were rescued.

Captain Nemo stated that none of the survivors were going to be allowed to return home and were forced to reside in the Utopian city of Templemir. This decision was only accepted by Mrs Beckett and her son Philip who wanted to remain behind though Fraiser wanted to continue his mission, Mr Lomax was claustrophobic of his new surroundings and the Bath brothers being greedy wanted to steal the gold in the settlement in order to be rich on the surface world. Despite their apprehension, they were given a tour of the city but by night Mr Lomax attempted to steal diving equipment in order to return to the surface. He was apprehended by the city's men though Captain Nemo did not punish him. In retaliation, Mr Lomax attempted to overpressurise the city in order to destroy it as an act of revenge though the end result was the room he was stationed in was getting flooded instead. This time, showing no mercy, Captain Nemo responded to the danger by sealing the room and letting Mr Lomax drown. Whilst the city was ultimately safe, the actions caused by Mr Lomax caused some devasation to ensue and in this chaos the Bath brothers managed to gain entry into the Forbidden Area. Once there, they discovered a larger as well as faster version of the Nautilus present in the area. Seeing it as a means of escape with the gold they could collect, the Bath brothers decide to form an alliance with Mr Fraiser who also desperately wanted to leave to achieve his diplomatic mission. After convicing Nemo to get lessons in piloting the Nautilus, the submarine gets attacked by the mutated Mobula which succumbs to the front rams of the vessel and thus was killed as a result.

After this chain of events, Senator Fraiser once more asks for Captain Nemo to be allowed to return to the surface after explaining the dangers of the American Civil War that was now raging in the United States. Nemo, however, feared for his people and his inventions being used in the wrong hands decided to refuse once more. Instead, he offered Senator Fraiser a place with him and Templemirs future with the intention of creating an entire metropolis of such undersea settlements. Unknown to him, his actions alienated his second in command Joab who had now noticed that his fiance Mala was attracted to the Senator. Seeing a means to eliminate his romantic rival, Joab was easily convinced to help Fraiser along with his colleagues to escape on the condition that they escape cleanly as well as return the Nautilus II. At the All Seas Day celebration where the population celebrated the completion of Templemir; Fraiser along with the Bath brothers made their chance to escape. Joab along with Fraiser and the Bath brothers manage to escape unaware that the second Nautilus suffered from dangerous malfunctions. In the ensuing escape, the submarine exploded with Joab and Barnaby Bath being killed but Fraiser and Swan escaping in diving suits. Before Captain Nemo could retrieve the two escapees, a passing British naval ship rescues the pair though when questioned how they got so far into the ocean without a ship - the pair decided to keep the existence of Templemir a secret forever.
