Biography

Gen (Japanese: 元 Hepburn: Gen) was a male human born in China on March 10.

In 1987, Gen entered the World Fighting Tournament that was hosted by Sagat in Thailand, participating at the China Division next to Lee, to fight against arch-enemy assassin Geki and eventually kill him, but Gen was unsuccessful at this task due to losing to Ryu, who previously defeated Geki during the Japan Division of the tournament. Six months later, Gen was diagnosed with leukemia, and did not have much time to live. At first, he decided he would be careful and just manage his restaurant, but old foes sent other assassins who made repeated attempts on him and his family's lives. Due to this, he decided he would stop hiding and go out fighting, in a blaze of glory, as he felt it was a more honorable way to die. He went on a search for a worthy opponent, taking on members of Shadaloo and other crime syndicates, to provoke a fight to the death in which he would meet his demise. Word got around about Akuma, a fighter who fully embraced the Satsui no Hado. After seeking him out, Gen challenged him to a fight that he hoped would be decisive. The two fought fiercely until the end, each surviving the other's finishing blow. The outcome of the battle varies based on the arcade route. In Akuma's non-canon ending, just as he begins to wonder whether Gen is the worthy opponent he's searching for, he begins to sense not all is as it seems. When Gen's mouth begins to bleed, Akuma's suspicions are confirmed: his opponent is sick, and the fight is not fair. After being knocked to the ground, Gen tells Akuma to kill him. Not wanting to carry the fight on any longer, Akuma leaves, infuriating Gen.[6] In Gen's canon ending, he narrowly defeats Akuma. However, in spite of Akuma's demands to end his life, Gen enjoyed the fight so much he couldn't bring himself to land the killing blow. He spares Akuma, hoping to one day battle him again

Overview

Personality and attributes

He was said to be over 70 years old by the current day. He was noted for being a legendary assassin who came to be known as the Devil of Hong Kong.

Gen is a silent, precise and wise man who takes fighting very seriously and prefers to take on formidable, honorable warriors, such as Ryu and Akuma. Elderly though he is, Gen's temperament is extremely sharp, his speech patterned with a weathered and biting coarseness. With a tendency to muse over death (likely rooted in his condition), he is also not hesitant to speak of such dark matters regarding the inevitable passing of all things, especially to those that walk the path of a fighter, since he seeks to die as he has lived: fighting.

Such was his reputation that he was regarded in the criminal underworld as Hong Kong's fist oni.

Powers and abilities

Gen was known as one of the legends of martial arts, supposedly being the "man who killed hundreds". He was not only a great martial artist, but a legendary assassin, said to be invincible.

He was familiar with two different fighting style techniques with these being the Mantis and Crane Style. These were effectively the Assassination Fist: Mourning Style (暗殺拳・喪流, Ansatsuken Sō Ryū) and the Assassination Fist: Abhor Style (暗殺拳・忌流, Ansatsuken Ki Ryū).

Gen was skilled in the following techniques:

  • Hyakurenko (百連勾 Hyakurenkou?, "Hundred Chained Hooks") :

  • Zan'ei (慘影? "Cruel Shadow") :
