Origin
The Hierarchy of International Vengeance and Extermination (H.I.V.E.)
Learning that a giant-sized artificial construct shaped in Superman's image was entering Earth orbit, and that this construct had been fashioned on Earth many years prior before being sent to space to begin with, the H.I.V.E. captured two ex-cons named Larch and Blisser and learned of their scheme from years ago to exploit "Superman Island," due to their discovery that it was being used as a Kryptonite repository. (Action Comics v1 #224) The H.I.V.E. detonated part of Superman Island over Metropolis, collected much of the released Kryptonite, and captured Lois Lane to motivate Superman into hot pursuit. The H.I.V.E. transported Lois to a fully automated offshore base and attempted to kill Superman with an arsenal of Kryptonite-based weapons. However, Superman obtained temporary immunity to Kryptonite from an alien colony which had established itself on Superman Island during its aimless drift through space. Using this advantage, Superman demolished the H.I.V.E. base and rescued Lois. (Action Comics v1 #513)
The H.I.V.E. attempted to hire Slade Wilson, the Terminator, to eliminate the then recently revived Teen Titans. Slade demanded payment in advance, but the H.I.V.E. refused. Unwilling to compromise his business practices, Slade turned his back on them. Undeterred, H.I.V.E. then turned to Slade's son Grant. Grant Wilson had already experienced an unfavorable altercation with the Teen Titans - one that cost him his girlfriend Carol Sladky. Grant agreed to undergo a biological enhancement process that would enable him to utilize 100% of his brain, making him the equal of the Terminator. After the process was complete, the H.I.V.E. provided him the costume and code name of the Ravager and sent him after the Titans. What they failed to tell him however, was that the more he used his enhanced strength and reflexes, the greater toll it would ultimately take on his body. Ravager attacked the Titans in New York and as predicted, the excessive energy quickly ate away at him, prematurely aging him to the point of death. The Terminator arrived on the scene just in time to cradle his son in his arms. Grant never knew that the Terminator was also his father. Slade recognized that Grant's contract for the H.I.V.E. was unfulfilled and agreed to honor his son's responsibility by killing the Titans. (New Teen Titans v1 #2)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. The Holistic Integration for Viral Equality were led by the H.I.V.E. Queen and responsible for freeing Hector Hammond from imprisonment in order to use his talents for their needs. (Action Comics v2 #22) Agents from the H.I.V.E. had infiltrated the S.T.A.R. Labs facility in the Arctic and sought to murder Caitlin Snow by sabotaging the equipment at the site. However, their actions only transformed Snow into a cold based creature known as Killer Frost. (Justice League v3 #7.2)

- In Teen Titans, H.I.V.E. appeared in the setting of the animated television series.
- In Arrow, H.I.V.E. appeared in the setting of the live-action television series set in the Arrowverse where they were first mentioned in the season 2 episode "Keep Your Enemies Closer". Floyd Lawton aka Deadshot mentioned that H.I.V.E. as being responsible for hiring him to kill John Diggle's brother.
- In Justice League Action, H.I.V.E. appeared in the setting of the animated television series in the episode "The Trouble with Truth". They were a mysterious terrorist organization that was founded and led by Damien Darhk after he left the League of Assassins. H.I.V.E. maintained an approach reflective of its roots within the League, but operated in accordance with Damien's own personal agenda rather than adhering to any particular creed. The organization's main focus was on the completion of an initiative known as 'Genesis', which was a plan to 'cleanse' the world of evil and darkness through nuclear holocaust, after which those chosen by H.I.V.E. to survive would be able to rebuild society. In 1975, Damien and two of his agents, known as "Ghosts" went to a weapons sale in Norway held by Vandal Savage, planning to buy a nuclear warhead from him. H.I.V.E. put in an initial bid of $100 million, but were outbid by Martin Stein. Damien later met Martin and told him he suspected Martin wasn't as he appeared as Damien wasn't familiar with him or his organization, and he was familiar with everyone. Stein's associate Mick Rory started to get angry with Damien and threatened him, forcing Savage to intervene. As a fight ensued, Damien and the Ghosts left the premises of the Norwegian military storage facility. In 1987, Eobard Thawne interrupted a weapons deal that Damien was taking part in and killed everyone present except Damien. Thawne attempted to recruit Damien for his team, and alluded to the fact that he knew about Damien's future plans, including building a "hive of followers". Thawne sent Damien to the White House to do a deal with the KGB. Damien, his Ghosts, and the KGB met in the White House basement. The KGB agents intended to exchange a priceless artifact for the United States' nuclear codes, while Darhk also left a bomb to kill Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, along with everybody in the White House. When the Legends showed up to stop Darhk, the KGB suspected treason on the H.I.V.E.'s behalf. Damien decided that the deal was over and it was time to go, and ordered the Ghosts to kill everyone there. The Legends beat the Ghosts and the KGB agents, but Darhk was whisked away by Eobard Thawne. After Floyd Lawton was incarcerated for threatening the lives of his family, Mina Fayad approached him as a representative of H.I.V.E., convincing Lawton that a normal life was not possible for him anymore after the events that had transpired. Fayad offered Lawton money to assassinate Andrew Diggle, though – unknown to Lawton – Diggle survived the attempt as H.I.V.E. had secretly replaced Lawton's bullets with non-lethal rounds. Diggle himself ended up becoming an agent of H.I.V.E., serving as one of its Ghosts.

- In Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, H.I.V.E. appeared as antagonists in the animated film. They were a criminal organization that were one part of Brother Blood's Church's operations and were used to accomplish his goals.
Video games
- In DC Universe Online, the H.I.V.E. featured as antagonists to both the heroes and the villains where they were led by the alien H.I.V.E. Queen Zazzala who had forged an alliance with Brainiac for control of Earth. Queen Bee as a result ordered her forces to attack S.T.A.R. Labs and LexCorp Transports carrying Exobytes that were travelling by the Metropolis Metrodome. Their goal was the recovery of the stolen Exobytes for Brainiac. The players were tasked with battling the H.I.V.E., defeating Queen Bee and combating the hypnotized Booster Gold. Among the H.I.V.E.'s forces included H.I.V.E. Drones, H.I.V.E. Foragers, H.I.V.E. Killer Bees, H.I.V.E. Recruits, H.I.V.E. Royal Drones, H.I.V.E. Stingers, H.I.V.E. Workers, H.I.V.E. Minders, Mortuary Bees and Major Honeygut.
