Biography
Origin
Jakeem Johnny Williams
It was noted that his mother left his father when she was still pregnant with their son. Jakeem later came to be orphaned when his mother die of cancer. Afterwards, his aunt Lawshawn took custody of the boy whilst his father never knew of Jakeem's birth. (JSA v1 #38)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. After her capture by Elias, Djinn was forced to bring to her brother the Stone of Souls or see her friends in the Teen Titans being killed. Thus, she summoned Jakeem Thunder as Yz possessed the relic. Upon being teleported, Jakeem called forth the Thunderbolt but Yz was scared of Elias who was the first of his kind. The demonic genie took the stone from Yz and then departed to wage his war against Heaven and claim its throne for himself. Djinn used her power to banish the Teen Titans and Jakeem Thunder to their base at Mercy Hall in the hope that they would be safe there from Elias. (Teen Titans v6 #39)

As a Bahdnisian thunderbolt, the pen contained a reality warping genie from the 5th dimension. (JLA v1 #28)
He could call upon the Thunderbolt's power by saying the words "Cei-U" that was similar to saying "Say you". This was the Thunderbolts name backwards allowing him to call upon its power. (JLA v1 #28)

- Jakeem Thunder was created by Grant Morrison, Mark Millar and Paul Ryan where he made his first appearance in Flash v2 #134 (February, 1998).
Alternate Versions
- In Kingdom Come v1 #1 (1996), an alternate version of the character named Thunder appeared in the Kingdom Come reality that was designated as Earth-22 in the Multiverse. He was among the rogue metahumans that were subdued by Superman and incarcerated at the Gulag. Thunder was among those that survived the U.N. nuclear bombing after being shielded from the nuclear blast by Green Lantern Jade. He later became a resident at Paradise Island.
- In The Multiversity: The Just v1 #1 (2014), an alternate version of the character named Jay-Jay Thunder appeared in The Just reality that was designated as Earth-16 in the Multiverse.

- In Stargirl, Jakeem Thunder appeared in the setting of the live-action television series where he was portrayed by actor Alkoya Brunson. After moving to Blue Valley, Mike Dugan befriends Jakeem. Mike asks his father, Pat Dugan, to make fish sticks for dinner since Jakeem wants to come over. Pat plans to make real fish sticks against Mike's wishes, but Jakeem was still welcome to come over. Mike Dugan finishes his paper route and takes a phone call from his boss, who gives him another route to finish that morning. Mike suggests giving it to Jakeem as the route would be in better hands, but their boss is insistent. That night, Mike looks at the Thunderbolt pen and realizes that he's not ready for that kind of power and wishes it were in better hands. The pen transports away in a cloud of pink smoke and sparkles. Across town, Jakeem is playing a console game in his bedroom when his mother bellows for him to come. He ignores her to finish his game, and his older sister Jenny comes to tell him their mom is looking for him. She then begins to taunt him mercilessly and calls him a loser, even holding an L to her forehead, before she saunters away. Jakeem stops his game to look down woefully. He admits that he is a loser. Just then, a pink pen appears on his desk and Jakeem picks it up, wondering what the object could be. From within, Thunderbolt chuckles that they were friends now. Jakeem was taken back when Mike tells him the circumstances that led to his ownership over the pen indicated that he was 'better hands' than the Thunderbolt's previous master. The town of Blue Valley is back to its cheerful, kind, and welcoming state since the events of the summer, as citizens chat with one another. Jakeem rides his bike past The Pit Stop on his paper route, throwing a newspaper to Zeek, who is getting out of his truck for work. He waves to the boy as he passes. Jakeem bikes ahead on his route, throwing a paper to Richard Swift, who picks it up off his lawn. He waves with a tight smile to Jakeem. Thunderbolt urges him to pump those feet, as the guy was spooksville and they should split. A few days later, Mike and Jakeem prepare for their paper route, stacking papers in their sacks. Jakeem questions the "bizarre accident in trailer park leaves one dead" headline, shaking his head as the rest of Blue Valley thinks it was a tornado. Mike is thrilled, as it's the best thing that could ever happen to them - a murdering murderer being murdered. If they can catch the killer, everyone's going to take them seriously. Jakeem reminds him they aren't detectives, but Mike puts a hand on his shoulder, as they are now. Thunderbolt zaps to life, beginning to ramble on about "Columbo", a reference that confuses Jakeem. Jakeem starts his Freshman year at Blue Valley High School, meeting up with Mike in the bathroom between classes. Mike scans the stalls to make sure they're alone. Jakeem reminds Mike that his dad said they should only use the Thunderbolt in emergencies. Mike tells him to stop saying that. The door they walked through says "me", not "boys". He stops Jakeem from checking, as he can do it on the way out. Jakeem retorts that's the kind of attitude that leads to toxic masculinity, which Mike doesn't know anything about. Jakeem did not have an explanation, either. Mike gives him the wish to find out who killed The Gambler. He went through a dozen drafts, so it's foolproof. It feels like cheating to Jakeem, but Mike urges him to just do it. Jakeem makes the wish and Thunderbolt zaps awake. It's an excellent question. This is why he spent years studying calligraphy. He burns the answer into the wall in giant pink calligraphy letters, adding an exclamation point at the end - "The killer has many names!". Mike exclaims it's a rip-off, wanting him to wish for it again. Jakeem reminds him they can't wish for the same thing twice. They decide to leave before anyone sees what Jakeem did to the wall. They hurry out, the "boys" bathroom door closing behind them.
