History
Nova-Keto-Thyrazine (Nectar) was created by Mantel Global Industries which were given to their soldiers as a nutritional supplement but in fact it served as a performance-enhancing pharmaceutical drug which allowed their infantry to fight harder. Nectar gives the user enhanced speed, intelligence, accuracy and strength as well as controls the minds of the soldier who uses it.
Sergeant Shane Carpenter, a veteran Mantel soldier in a dystopian future where he was enticed by Mantel Propaganda and dropping out of college, arriving in the Boa region of South America, where Mantel troops have been dispatched to liberate the country from a rebel group known as "the Promise Hand" which is accused of ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity by Mantel's mass media division. Shane meets his squad-mates: Sergeant Morgan Duvall, who is the leader of the squad, Lance Corporal Teare, and Corporals Peshy and "Watchstrap". Teare is quickly berated and dismissed by Duvall for not taking his requisite dose of Mantel's performance-enhancing drug Nectar. Over a series of missions fighting for Mantel, Shane's Nectar administrator fails to drug him on several occasions, causing him to witness a number of disturbing events: he hears screams which Duvall dismisses as 'just an animal', he has a conversation with a pilot that had received no wounds from a crash and yet dies mysteriously. Duvall doesn't seem to care about this discrepancy. Shane sees the dead bodies of civilian factory workers that Duvall's squad massacred in an earlier mission because, as Duvall states to Shane, "an empty hand is just a grip away from holding a weapon."
Overview
Once administered, the visuals the soldier experiences are also affected. They are no longer cognizant of the battlefield and view an idyllic, painless environment that they are fighting in. The hallucinogenic nature of the drug makes enemies stand out while at the same time drowning imagery of death and destruction which had a more grayer darker background. This forces the soldier to fight just their enemies and forget any other obstacle in their path.
While these are the benefits of Nectar, the drug was still very dangerous due to the loss of mental control with death being one of the possible side effects of overdose. Rebel soldiers have been known to make Nectar grenades which force a Mantel soldier to suffer from an overdose in order to kill or incapacitate them. An overdose of Nectar is dangerous, with loss of mental control and death being possible side effects. Nectar also enhances the soldiers' fighting capabilities, allowing them to run faster and jump higher. They also receive a boost in reaction time.
Soldiers receive Nectar via their Nectar Administrator, which was responsible for regulating and administering Nectar. When the soldiers do not get their regular dose of Nectar, they experience withdrawal symptoms like hallucinations, loss of colour/vision, blackouts and instability of movement. Subjects who do not receive their required dosage of Nectar are classed as Code Haze, meaning they will be experiencing withdrawal, and hunted down by Mantel.
