Order of Aurelius

The Order of Aurelius are a cult that features in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

History

The Order of Aurelius was a cult of Vampires that were founded by a figure known as Aurelius who wrote prophecies of the future. (Episode: Never Kill A Boy on the First Date)

It was then that the appointed century long event known as the Harvest was ready to commence. The Master selected Luke to be his Vessel where the vampire was branded with his symbol and sent to feed on humans. Those drained had their life essence sent to the Master to empower him to break the barrier holding him at the Hellmouth. (Episode: The Harvest)

As predicted by the Pergamum Codex, the Master confronted Buffy in his prison, and he quickly defeated the Slayer, while numbers of vampires gathered around the Hellmouth to await the return of the Old Ones. Empowered by the Slayer's blood, the Master broke free of his prison, leaving her to die. As the Master left to witness the emergence of a demon from the Hellmouth, Buffy was revived and confronted the Master again, ultimately defeating him by throwing him through the Sunnydale High School library skylight and impaling him on a large piece of wood. With the Master dead, the members of the Order retreated. (Episode: Prophecy Girl)

Unlike most vampires, who turned completely to dust upon their death, the Master had left behind a skeleton, which Giles buried in consecrated ground. Months after the Master’s death, the remaining Order gathered around the leadership of the Anointed One and moved their lair to the Bric & Broc abandoned factory. The young vampire, with the aid of his leading acolyte Absalom, had the Master's skeleton unearthed as part of an attempt to resurrect him through a ritual that involved the people that were around the Master at the time of his demise. The Aurelian vampires then kidnapped Giles, Willow, Cordelia, and Jenny to sacrifice them. However, Buffy, Angel, and Xander managed to stop the ritual before their friends were killed. In the resulting fight, Buffy slain some members of the Order, including Absalom, and destroyed the Master's bones. (Episode: When She Was Bad)

The surviving vampires of the Order of Aurelius sought to kill the Slayer Buffy Summers on the Night of Saint Vigeous. It was decided that whoever killed her would then take the place of the Master as the new leader of their number. However, the newly arrived Spike changed their plans by taking a large group of the Order's members on an attack on Sunnydale High two nights before that event. With their numbers depleted, and the feast ruined, the Anointed's second demanded Spike to lay down his life in penance. Instead, Spike killed the Anointed One and took control of the surviving vampires, announcing the end of the Order's rigid traditions and rituals. (Episode: School Hard)

Among their strongest were a trio of warrior vampires known as the Three who were known for being very strong and very proud. (Episode: Angel)

One important time was the Night of St. Vigeous was considered a holy time when the vampires conducted a feast. It was named after a vampire who led a crusade of his kind as they swept through Edessa, Harran, and points east. The event involved the unholy ones scourge themselves for three nights into a fury that culminated in a savage attack on the night itself. (Episode: School Hard)

The Anointed One according to prophecy was said to be responsible for leading the Slayer to hell. (Episode: Prophecy Girl)

Video games

• In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Order of Aurelius appeared in the setting of the 2002 non-canon X-Box video game. Spike took the remnants of the cult and brought them together after receiving orders from the Old One Laibach of the Abyss.
