Biography
Origin
Reiner Braun (Japanese: ライナー・ブラウン, Hepburn: Rainā Buraun?) was a male human born the son of an Eldian woman named Karina Braun and a Marleyan man where he was an illegitimate child from the relationship. Born in the Liberio (レベリオ Reberio?, also translated as Rebellio) internment zone, he was one of many Eldians that were treated cruelly by the Marleyans due to their ancestry. Whilst growing up, he was not allowed to see his father as relations between Eldians and Marleyans was strictly forbidden. By this point, the Marley government had instituted the Warrior Unit (戦士隊 Senshi-tai?) program that recruited Eldians to become a Warrior candidate. These individuals were to be trained to potentially inherit the power of one of the Nine Titans. Reiner came to be a Warrior candidate after coming to the decision with his mother as the reward offered by the military was the volunteer's family receiving the status of honorary Marleyans. With this in mind, Reiner came to believe that he would be reunited with his father and that their family would be whole once again.
Paradis Island Operation
The death of Marcel led to Annie believing that the mission was a failure and that they should recover the Jaw Titans power after which they should return to Marley. However, such a failure would have resulted in the entire unit being punished and potentially killed as a result. Thus, Reiner suggested that they push forward with the mission where he emphasised the punishment their families would receive as a result. An angry Leonhart resented at being forced in this position but decided to go forward with Reiner's plan as they made their way to the city.
With the Wall destroyed, the three then made their way into the city and disguised themselves as refugees that were fleeing deeper into the City.
Return
Falco then took him to the basement of the building stating that an old friend wanted to meet him. Inside was a crippled soldier who Reiner came to realise was actually Eren Yaeger in disguise who had infiltrated Marley.
By the time of his return to Marley, he held a deep sense of regret over his actions with this guilt leading him to contemplate suicide. He stated that he only wanted to die and did not deserve to continue living. In one case, he once put a gun to his mouth with him intending to kill himself but could not go forward with the act.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Reiner Braun was a male human with short blond hair, hazel eyes, and a defined facial structure. His large height, broad shoulders, and serious expression give him an intimidating presence. As the Armored Titan (鎧の巨人 Yoroi no Kyojin?), he took the form of a 15 meters tall humanoid Titan covered in white plates of hardened skin.
Like many Eldians, he was raised from a young age to believe that his race was responsible for all the wrongdoings in the history of the world. When he was a child, he was rather quiet and meek yet at the same time very loyal and driven. As such, he longed to be respected by the Marleyans and to be made an honorary Marleyan thinking that this would reunite his parents.
Reiner had wanted to be a hero which was why he always acted like everyone's big brother. This was because he wanted people to respect him.
Such was his guilt that he felt like he wanted to vanish. In one instance, he even begged Eren to kill him.
Powers and abilities
As an Eldian, Reiner Braun had the necessary genetics that allowed him to transform into a Titan. This resulted in him being assigned to the Warrior Unit and a potential inheritor of one of the Nine Titans.
As one of the Nine, he held the Power of the Titans where at a trigger he could transform into the 15-meter tall Armored Titan (鎧の巨人 Yoroi no Kyojin?).
Within the Marleyan military, he came to join the ranks of the Warrior Unit (戦士隊 Senshi-tai?). These were Eldians tasked with inheriting the power of one of the Nine Titans and use its power for the benefit of their nation. Marleyan Warriors were expected to carry out the needs of their superiors without question or objection. After infiltrating Paradis Island, he came to join the Survey Corps after graduating 2nd in the 104th Training Corps.
