In Gotham City's Chinatown, the Envoy Xanthe was visiting their grandmothers grave when strange magic ripped a hole in the veil between worlds causing jiangshi spirits to emerge to attack them. Whilst battling the spirits, they were assisted by Batgirl Cassandra Cain and later by John Constantine. Xanthe came to conduct an exorcism when the spirits conglomerated into a single collective entity of greater power. However, in the chaos, a doorway into the Spirit World opened where they attempted to send the spirits back only for them to grab onto Cassandra Cain and drag her to the other side with no way back. There were gates that existed as doorways between the land of the living and the Spirit World. However, some of these could be damaged and unable to open. It was said that the barrier between the worlds was most permeable on rainy days. This meant that one was able to tear open a doorway to the Spirit World on such days. (Spirit World v2 #1)
In some occasions, groups of spirits gathered into a collective that were a twisted mass of tortured baleful souls. (Spirit World v2 #1)
Certain living beings who came to serve the balance between the living world and Spirit World were known as Spirit Envoys. (Spirit World v2 #1)
It was said that living people did not last long in Spirit World. This was because all the inhabitants of that realm were drawn to the life force of the living. Spirits found the scent of the living to be irresistible and actively chased after such people if found in Spirit World. (Spirit World v2 #1)
Clothes and garments could manifest in the realm with their essence being purely made of Spirit World. (Spirit World v2 #1)
