History
Golden Age
The Batcave was an underground cavern that was situated in Gotham City.
In 1654, the site of the Batcave featured was used by colonial scout Jeremy Coe as a base to spy on local Indian activity. (Detective Comics v1 #205)
A criminal by the name of Wolf Brando once escaped the Gotham police and took refuge in the nearby Wayne Manor. Once there, he knocked Dick Grayson unconscious and later discovered the Batcave allowing him to determine that Bruce Wayne was Batman. He sought to blackmail the Caped Crusader and later used the weapons in the cave against the vigilante. After being cornered, Brando accidently slips and falls into the underground stream where he dies. (Batman v1 #48)
The villainous Dr. Doom managed to discover the Batcave after accidently smuggling himself into the secret lair. Once there, he attacked the Dynamic Duo with various weapons in the Hall of Trophies. After seeking shelter from his own hand grenade, he sought shelter but died of suffocation. (Detective Comics v1 #158)

Modern
With the League fractured, Batman and Superman decided that the only way to restore trust was to reveal their secret identities to the others. This led to the other Justice League members being teleported into the Batcave with Batman revealing his identity as Bruce Wayne whilst Superman showed that he was Clark Kent. (JLA v1 #50)
In 3009, the Earth came under a xenophobic government control who deployed the Justice League of Earth to remove any aliens on the planet. This led to members of the Legion of Super-Heroes being on the run where one of their teams sought an advantage to prove Superman's ties to Krypton with them going to the abandoned remains of the Batcave in this era. Once there, they were attacked by the Earth's super-powered team led by Earth-Man who captured the Legionnaires. (Action Comics v1 #859)

He also maintained a number of satellite caves that included:
- Lunar Cave : a huge underground facility situated underground on the dark side of the Moon which was where he worked on experiments and equipment too dangerous to be done at Gotham as they could put innocents in harm's way. It was guarded by basic sentry probes that were designed in the form of bats. (Superman v4 #5)
Notes
- The Batcave first appeared in the Batman serial where it debuted as the Bat's Cave in "The Electrical Brain" (April, 1943).
- It was later adapted to the comics by Bill Finger.
- In Detective Comics v1 #186 (1952), Batman and Robin briefly operated from a flying helicopter headquarters known as the Flying Batcave when they could not set foot in Gotham.

Television
- In the DC Animated Universe, the Batcave made a number of appearances in the shared continuity setting.
- In Batman: The Animated Series, the Batcave made its first appearance with it being regularly seen in the animated series.
- In Justice League, the Batcave returned in the animated series with it making a number of appearances. In "Starcrossed", Batman told his Justice League comrades to rendezvous at Wayne Manor to escape the occupying Thanagarians where they were escorted to the Batcave. Hawkgirl made her way to the cave in order to pass key intelligence to her Justice League comrades. A Thanagarian strike force followed her to the site to capture the superheroes who battled and defeated the alien attackers.
- In Batman Beyond, the Batcave once again featured in the animated series with it being regularly seen with multiple appearances.
- In The Batman, the Batcave featured as part of the setting within the animated series. In "The Joining", it was revealed that Lucius Fox had designed parts of the Batcave. In the episode "Artifacts", it was shown that its structure was reinforced with titanium and it managed to survive a thousand years into the future. By the 31st century, an archaeological team managed to uncover the Batcave whilst they were seeking it and a means to defeat Mr. Freeze who had been released into this era accidently and was freezing city. Through studying the titanium, they found binary coded messages left by Batman for those in the future that provided information on how to defeat his villains. By consulting it, they managed to use holograms to scare Mr. Freeze and defeat him where they captured him. Afterwards, the Batcave was renovated and a statue of the Batman was placed to honor his accomplishments. In "Mirror Darkly", the Flash was framed for a number of crimes by Mirror Master and decided to meet with Batman with the speedster taking an hour to find the Batcave.
Films
- In Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the Batcave was shown in the animated film adaptation of the comic storyline. Kara Zor-El who had arrived disoriented on Earth was taken there by Batman after he was unsure of her identity. After waking, she lost control of her powers and let loose her heat vision that destroyed a monitor until Superman arrived teaching her to control her abilities. It was only then discovered that Kara was Superman's cousin who survived the destruction of Krypton.
- In The Dark Knight Trilogy, the Batcave made a number of appearances in the shared continuity setting.
- In Batman Begins, the Batcave made its first appearance in the live-action film. After Bruce Wayne returned to Gotham City, he decided to become a vigilante and adopted the guise of the Batman. He constructed the Batcave in the cavern underneath Wayne Manor to serve as his base of operations.
- In Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Batcave appeared in the setting of the 2019 animated film adaptation of the comic crossover. After encountering the Batman, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles investigated the urban myth regarding the mysterious vigilante. They concluded that his lair could be reached via a system of underground waterways that led straight into the Batcave. Following an initial encounter, the two sides came to ally with one another against the threat posed by Ra's al Ghul and the Shredder. This saw the Turtles reside briefly in the Batcave as they assisted the Batfamily against their common foe.
- In Batman: Hush, the Batcave appeared in the setting of the 2019 animated film. After revealing his identity to Catwoman, Batman took Selina Kyle to the Batcave where he introduced her to his closest allies.
Video games
- In Batman: Arkham Asylum, whilst the main Batcave did not feature a secondary satellite cave was shown to had been established by Batman that was situated beneath Arkham Asylum. This was created to serve as another base of operations in case he was ever separated from the primary Batcave.
- In DC Universe Online, the Batcave featured as a level within the MMORPG. After the Watchtower, it was Brainiacs second target due to the advanced technology within it. Thus, he dispatched Brother Eye who converted it and its occupants with OMAC technology.
- In Injustice: Gods Among Us, the Batcave features in part of the story and as a playable stage in the video game.
- In Injustice 2, the Batcave appeared in the video game sequel where it was part of the story mode and a playable stage. This was a new Batcave that was built in the Gotham Underground and was the base of operations for Batman that also contained the Brother Eye computer. It contained special machines designed to neutralise anyone that attempted to use a Boom Tube to enter it. A special doorway could be used to enter it that could be accessed from the underground railway line.
- In Batman: The Telltale Series, the Batcave featured in the 2016 video game as the secret headquarters of Batman that was situated underneath Wayne Manor.
