Biography
Bloodwynd
Around 160 years ago, his ancestors were brought to the United States as cargo on-board slave ships. They were sent to a cotton plantation in the American colonies where they became the property of Jacob Whitney who treated them horribly. The cruel treatments made on them led to the slaves deciding to perform a ritual that resulted in the creation of the mystical Blood Gem. They had intended to use it as a means of achieving peace and cared not what forces they unleashed in the process so long as it ended the cruelty inflicted on them. It was given to a woman named Clemma who in the cover of night unleashed its dark power over her slave master where Whitney's black soul was snatched from his body and drawn into the gem for all eternity. Though their slavery had not ended, they came to to exact their vengeance on a person who had greatly wronged them. (Justice League America v1 #77)
Months ago, Bloodwynd experienced turmoil where he struggled to contain Rott from attempting to take control of his body. In that time, he was approached by flying Martian Manhunter who attempted to render aid and mistakenly believed the gem to be the cause of the problem. The Green Martian then removed the gem from Bloodwynd's chest thus causing him to be trapped into the relic and allowing Rott to take command. He then mentally influenced the Martian Manhunter into wearing the gem thus making him take Bloodwynd's form and become Rott's puppet. (Justice League America v1 #77)
Overview
Personality and attributes
The Blood Gem was a family relic passed from one generation to another where it was the bearer and their descendants duty to protect it. (Justice League America v1 #77)
Powers and abilities
The power of Bloodwynd was tied to the Blood Gem that was a mystical gem crated through a magic ritual using incantations as old as man's first footsteps on earth. This gem was fashioned from the blood of slaves where it made with their sorrow and misery. Unearthly magical materials were used in its construction where it was made for a dark purpose. It was noted that the gem acted as a conduit to access the powers of a mystical dimension that resided in it. As such, Bloodwynd's powers were noted to be tied to his Blood Gem where he could not even fly without it. The longer it existed the greater the power of the gem. (Justice League America v1 #77)
Those linked with the gem came to be influenced by it where they experienced cravings for evil with the dark side of the bearer's personality forming within it. Over time, the living manifestation of the gem and all the evils contained within it took the form of a creature named Rott. The demonic being was the evil of Jacob Whitney merged with the dark side of all previous bearers of the Blood Gem. (Justice League America v1 #77)
The gem itself acted as a gateway to another dimension that was filled with mystical energies. (Justice League America v1 #77)
