Rocksteady (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)

Rocksteady is a male character who features in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Biography

1987

Rocksteady was originally a Caucasian-American human member of a gang of criminals who operated under the Foot, when one of their thefts was interrupted by an attack by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Rocksteady was originally a short and stocky blond Caucasian man. With the other members of his gang, he was sent out to stop a Channel 6 reporter named April O'Neil from doing a report about crime in the city. April ran down into the sewers while being chased by the street gang and met the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who then defeated the gang in a fight. After this humiliating setback, the Shredder developed a plan to defeat the Turtles by mutating members of the street gang, so that they would have abilities greater than the Turtles'. Rocksteady and his friend Bebop were voluntarily mutated into evolved animals (though neither was particularly aware of what it would entail) with the promise that it would allow them to exact revenge on the Turtles and gain superhuman powers. He was held down by belts on a laboratory chair, and his DNA was mutated with a rhinoceros kidnapped from the zoo. Rocksteady became a half-man, half-rhinoceros. As a result, Rocksteady had the enormous strength of his animal counterparts, with the disadvantage being his appearance. Together with Bebop, the second victim of the experiment, Rocksteady supported Shredder henceforth in carrying out his plans. However, though the transformation did make them larger and stronger, they remained incompetent and were often inept at stopping the Turtles or carrying out Shredder's plans.

IDW

Maxence was a gang member where he and his buddy Bebop were kicked out of their gang. They joined the Foot Clan and defeated a bunch of other gang members for the honor to become mutants. Rocksteady became a mutant rhino while Bebop became a mutant warthog. After screwing up a job and thinking Karai to be dead Rocksteady suggests that since Karai is dead, they return to Foot Headquarters and just say that she deserted. Karai isn't dead, however, and has overheard the entire mutinous conversation. She sends a bunch of Foot Ninjas to kill them. However, Rocksteady and Bebop defeated them and ask for a second chance. Karai than decided to keep them due to their brute strength.

2012

Ivan Steranko

Steranko wass revealed to collect ancient artifacts and is shown to have Excalibur and the Spear of Destiny in his collections; he also has the ability to tell the difference between a fake and real artifact. He was revealed to have some past history with master thief Anton Zeck, who at that time he was helping him with a vaguely defined job  and also is who shot out Steranko's right eye. Steranko hires Zeck to steal the Shredder's helmet, the Kuro Kabuto, from the Shredder to add to his collection. When Zeck meets up with Steranko in his helicopter, they discover that Leo had swapped it out with dirty diapers. Upon discovering this, Steranko vows to hurt Zeck for it. • In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rocksteady made his first appearance in the 1987 animated television series where he was voiced by actor Cam Clarke.
• In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rocksteady appeared in the setting of the 2012 animated television series where he was voiced by actor Fred Tatasciore. This version was originally Ivan Steranko a Russian arms dealer who had dealings with the Shredder and Foot Clan. After displeasing the Shredder, he was captured and forcibly mutated thus becoming merged with rhinoceros genetic material where he along with the similarly mutated Anton Zeck were sent after the Ninja Turtles. During their encounter, Michelangelo decided to give the name Rocksteady to Steranko after seeing the name in the junkyard with Ivan coming to like the name.
