Biography
Shiki Granbell (Japanese: シキ・グランベル, Hepburn: Shiki Guranberu?) was a male human who was an inhabitant of the Sakura Cosmos.
After encountering Shiki, the Demon King Ziggy decided to end his quest for the search for Mother. Instead, he returned to the Sakura Comos and took the boy to planet Granbell where as the boy's adoptive grandfather he decided to raise the child.
Whilst there, he came to be close friends with all the robots on planet Granbell with Michael being among them. One day, he was beside Ziggy and Michael when they watched comets fly in the sky. It was then that his grandfather told him that he should explore the universe and friends.
Granbell later came to be visited by a pair of travellers named Rebecca Bluegarden and Happy. Shiki came upon the two when they were confronted by a giant robotic cat monster. After realizing that Rebecca is another human and being punched for invading her personal space, Shiki asks Rebecca to be his friend but is rejected. He then follows Rebecca and Happy as they flee back to the town. After greeting them again, Shiki introduces them to all of his friends before taking part in a large celebration with them and then falling asleep. After waking up to discover that his long hair had been cut. He discovered the robots had captured Rebecca and Happy and tried to kill them in order to take their ship in order to get revenge on humanity for abandoning them. After saving Rebecca and Happy from the robots and offering to stay behind to give them time to escape, Rebecca pulls him along with her acknowledging him as a friend. They then begin their adventure into the Sakura Cosmos and Shiki expresses that he misses his friends but is eager to make one hundred more in the universe. Now traveling with Rebecca and Happy, Shiki begins to learn about the outside world such as B-Cube and multiple other things, even learning about Rebecca's B-Cube channel. Rebecca eventually landed the Aqua Wing on Blue Garden with hopes of registering Shiki into her Guild Shooting Starlight as an Adventurer. In the Guild, Shiki was surprised to see so many people that he wanted to touch them, much to Rebecca's dismay. After Rebecca stops him from touching someone's face, he notices the giant hologram of Mother. After Rebecca's explanation, Shiki claims that he met Mother before, causing everyone to laugh much to Rebecca's embarrassment. When Labilia Christy's insults caused Rebecca to cry, he used his Ether Gear on the latter and told her not to make fun of his friends before Rebecca dragged him out of the place. After obtaining his Adventurer Card, Shiki tells Rebecca that they should find Mother themselves and make it into a video. This excites Rebecca, but tells Shiki that they need find to get a better ship in order to make the trip beyond the Sakura Cosmos. They are later seen flying the Aqua Wing towards Planet Norma.
On the Aqua Wing, Rebecca told Shiki that he could stay in the guest room as she refused to share her room with him. When Rebecca tells him that the ship is on autopilot, he asks to fly it for a while. Rebecca and Happy, thinking they could get a lot of views from him flying for the first time, agree. Later, the Aqua Wing has crashed on planet Norma, with Rebecca furious yet happy that she got footage of it. As Happy wondered about what to do with the ship, Shiki lifted it up and sets it back down, revealing he can make things lighter with his Ether Gear. At that moment, an alarm goes off warning the three that there it is about to rain earth ether crystals, much to Shiki's shock. Happy explains that Ether is the source of all "power" present in everything in the universe; in simpler terms, it's magic. In Shiki's case, his Ether Gear can rearrange the flow of Ether in his body like that of a machine. As the Earth Ether continues coming down, the group heads below the surface, revealing a massive, underground city where Shiki is amazed at all the people and animals present. As they arrive at Professor Weisz's house, Rebecca realizes he is nowhere to be found. Happy notices that he hasn't read his emails, either. Shiki picks up a set of goggles and starts messing with them, and discovers that they give him x-ray vision. Rebecca tells him to stop messing with the Professor's stuff, but just as she tries to take the goggles off, a young man with a gun appears telling them not to move. The young man asks them why they are in someone else's house, and Rebecca and Happy nervously explain that looking for Professor Weisz Steiner, the man who fixed up happy. The man says that he was Weisz Steiner before asking them who they are, much to everyone's shock. Rebecca told the young man calling himself Weisz that they came looking for Professor Weisz, though the man accused them of working for someone called Sibir. Before they can go any further, Shiki pointed out that there was someone on the floor above them where moments before shots started firing on them. Shiki leapt up to the ceiling and, using the goggles to locate the attacker, finishes him off and sending him falling below. Meanwhile, Weisz gets onto a motorcycle and flees while everyone is distracted. The attacker tells them to deliver a message to Weisz: that those who betray them will die by ;Strong-Ma'" Sibir's hands, much to Shiki's amusement.
At a riverside restaurant, Rebecca tries to make sense of what happened and why the young man has the same name as Professor Weisz but is much younger. While Happy and Shiki think he created a youth-restoring drug that wiped his memories, Rebecca realizes that she could not connect to the Net, with Happy unable to do so either. Just then, a news report comes on about how a new Adventurer's Guild, Shooting Starlight, had been founded on Blue Garden; only Shooting Starlight was founded 50 years ago. Rebecca remembers how she and Happy had visited Weisz one time and asked to live with him only to be turned down because, according to Weisz, the planet was dying. Back in the present, Rebecca takes the three outside the restaurant and realizes how old all the technology is. Shocked, Rebecca realizes that they somehow traveled back to Norma 50 years in the past, the year X442, meaning that the man they met was Professor Weisz 50 years ago. While the three try to put together what has happened, a giant robot suddenly appears, piloted by the one calling himself Sibir. Assuming the three are with Weisz, Sibir is determined to make them pay for Weisz stealing from him. Meanwhile, in another part of the city, Weisz holds onto a briefcase that he says is his and will never let Sibir get his hands on. Having found the group in the middle of the city, Sibir demands that Shiki, Rebecca, and Happy tell him where Weisz is, saying that he stole money from him. Rebecca nervously says they don't know where he is, and while Sibir argues with his men to attack them, Rebecca suggests they run for it so they avoid changing the past. As they try to flee, Sibir's men take notice, causing them to chase after them. Shiki uses his Satan Gravity to have them fly down the street as Sibir and his men look on in shock before starting to shoot at them with missiles. Just when Sibir is about to catch up to them, Shiki counters with his Gravity Fist technique, causing Sibir's mecha to explode. As Shiki, Rebecca, and Happy took the opportunity to escape, Sibir furiously said that they will definitely come back.
Upon gaining his grandfathers ship, Shiki came to remark that it belonged to all of them as they were a team and would be adventuring together. He dismisses Weisz when he tries to claim some ownership as well. Rebecca advises that they should clean the ship first, a Shiki frightened asks Happy to call the Kawpicatts octopi instead of bugs. Shiki is quickly teased by Rebecca and Weisz about this, when he notices how sad Pino is. He asks her if it is about his grandfather, which she confirms. Hearing this he leaves, asking her to help with the cleaning as she is also part of the team. While cleaning in one of the halls, he tells Weisz that no one asked him to help. After being told to wear something, Shiki goes off to find some clothes. After getting new clothes, Shiki and the others show off their new outfits. Rebecca then asks him and Wiesz about learning Ether Gear, which Shiki confirms he learned from his grandfather. He smugly states that he learned in a month after Weisz says that it takes years to master. He listens as Pino wonders if the room they are in is Ziggy's, which makes Shiki notice how it is constructed differently from the rest. He recollects how his grandfather never found Mother, making him promise to get the ship to her and sits on the throne. Suddenly Ether lines start glowing on Shiki's arms and the throne as a voice announces the activation of protocal A7, executing a chain of command transfer procedure. Shiki is confused as Ether lines start spreading before the protocol is complete, asking if someone is around. The voice welcomes the Demon King to which Shiki says that his grandfather's dead. Shiki is warned of the wall opening behind him by Rebecca as the source of the voice arrives. An android appears and introduces herself as Witch of the Demon King's Four Shining Stars, built by the Demon King. After being informed that she will carry out whatever order he gives, he asks her to bark like a dog as a joke, which she does anyway. He watches as she purges the ship of its infestation and is amazed as she restores the ship to its original form. Witch calls him the Demon King again, but he tries to correct her before she rectifies that he is the new Demon King. He was surprised as Witch kneels and exclaims that the Edens Zero's king has finally returned. Shiki listened as Witch stated that while the ship has returned its original form, its true power has yet to be regained. He questions this, which Witch explains that she heard their conversation about finding Mother, saying that they should think of her as a part of the ship, and that with all the Four Shining Stars they will be able to pass Dragonfall, the border separating the Sakura Cosmos from out space. Excited about hearing dragons, Shiki exclaims that he wants to see them and smiles as Witch says that they need to find the other three Shining Stars. Afterward, he, Weisz and Pino explore the ship, finding a giant door. After Weisz fails to open it, Shiki is surprised to hear Witch explain that it is one of the ship's most classified secrets, Code 3171. He asks what is behind it, which he is told that she isn't authorized to say. When Witch calls herself an object when Weisz asks for Privacy, Shiki says that she is not as she has a heart. He is then asked by Pino if she has heart as well, which he says that she does. Pino requests that she wants to join him on his journey, which he says is too late as he already counted her on coming. He then makes it official and they fist bump, squabbling over what Pino should call him.
On Blue Garden, Shiki noted how there were still a lot of people on the world. He came to watch as Weisz left them to enjoy the 'future' and was unimpressed. They then go to the guild to find information about Sister. When they get there they encounter Clarisse and Labilia, the latter mocking Rebecca again. Shiki tries to stop her, but she quickly hugs him and asks that he be part in one of her videos. He declines, saying that he will not help someone who bullies Rebecca and watches her leave. He then hears that the Guild Master wants to talkt to Rebecca, making Shiki question the person's identity. They eat together and talk about the Guild Master, who he wants to meet, but Rebecca and Happy head to his office. Being left alone and with nothing to do, they decide to go exploring. He tries to show off what he knows of Blue Garden, but Pino identifies them with ease, annoying him. They then try to find the restaurant run by 'dogs', getting lost in the process. Eventually, they come across Labilia being assaulted. Shiki grabs the guy's arm before he could hit Labilia, telling him that he is making her uncomfortable. He panics when the guy pulls off his arm and makes it fly away from him. Wondering who the guy is, Pino analyzes that he is a cyborg. When Labilia asks him for help, Shiki says he could care less about her but will not let the mercenary get away with this. He remembers what his grandfather said to him about helping those who call for help, and that is the first step to become someone’s friend. The cyborg refutes his sentiment and the two argue about his work. The two activate their Ether Gears and prepare to fight, Shiki stating that he will not lose to a jerk with no heart.
Afterwards, Shiki gave Rebecca her B-Cube back and she thanked him after which she mentioned that it was a gift from the Professor. Pino asks Rebecca if she was able to contact him but she revealed that could not. Shiki excitedly wonders if he is trying to get to mother too, which catches Weisz's attention. He then asked where Homura is, which reminds Weisz of their deal. Rebecca tells the two that Homura chose to receive Witch's mind-numbing torture and pleasure massage while screaming it was part of her training. Shiki and Weisz blush at the thought. Happy asks Weisz his condition and he explains that it's that she has to wear the clothes he picks for her from the Dress Factory. He then tells Pino that she would look great in a bunny girl suit while Shiki exclaims his desire to wear one. Rebecca and Happy decide to make a video and Pino wonders where they'll get more clues about the Shining Stars. Sister reveals she has a few leads but points out they're near Iron Hill. Shiki and the rest of the crew look out the window as the colossal monolithic structure comes into view. Sister points out the statue of Olghia, a hero who survived the Dark Ages. The crew is amazed at the size of the statue. Pino points out another one, which depicts the hero Arcelik. Sister then points out the statues of Nikolaus and Urochloa. Weisz asks how many there are. Sister replies there were 12 and explains that they are the heroes who guarded the Sakura Cosmos during the Dark Ages; the Heavenly Knights of the Dancing Sakura, the guardians of Blue Garden. Rebecca admits she had no idea about this place despite living on Blue Garden. Pino points out there is someone out there and Sister remarks that she didn't expect her first guess to pay off. She wonders if they're reading her mind and reveals the person as Hermit. Shiki and Rebecca are happy to have found Hermit so quickly and Sister remarks that Hermit loved Iron Hill. She then notices something wrong and orders Mosco to bring her on board. Once Hermit is on the ship, Witch and Homura rush to the infirmary where Sister explains that Hermit has too many system errors and her Healing won't fix this. Weisz says he can't fix her when asked by Shiki. Pino's analysis of Hermit reveals that there is nothing wrong with her system and there are no viruses. Witch concludes that Hermit's heart has been damaged. Happy and Homura wonder if Hermit went through something traumatic while Shiki asks for a way to save her. Witch and Sister admit they don't know how, then Shiki suggests they go inside Hermit and fix her heart, which baffles Rebecca and Weisz. When the crew shoots down Shiki's idea he claims he feels bad for Hermit and begins crying. Witch then suddenly commends Shiki for his idea and claims that Hermit's mind may actually be on the planet Digitalis. Shiki is eager to go there and save Hermit, but Witch claims they all must dive to access the world. Weisz compares it to an online game and Rebecca clarifies that it started as an MMORPG called Rogue Fantasia. Witch explains that the game was abandoned when the NPCs became self-aware and the game became impossible to manage, but the society continues as if populated by normal people. When asked why she believes Hermit is there, Witch answers that Hermit liked the game, it's possible to log into Digitalis, and she trusts Shiki's instincts, and Shiki promises that he will save her.
Overhearing her orders, Shiki demands to know what she's going to do to the Labor District. After hearing that she's going to kill everyone there, he tells her that Homura is there, only to hear that she doesn't mind, angering him even more. He witnesses a giant mech rise up from the ground, wondering what it is. He is told by Kurenai that it is the Kurenai Dragoon, she boards in it and punches Shiki out the window. He lands on a bridge that is quickly destroyed by Kurenai. He punches the Knight Gear from above, but barely makes a scratch. Crushed under the fist, Shiki wonders why he could not make the Knight Gear lighter. He is told by Kurenai that the Ether coating protects Kurenai Dragoon from his Ether Gear. In this case, he makes the ground even heavier, sending them down into a city, the Labor District. He grabs onto the Kurenai Dragoon and changes his own gravity, slamming into the ground. He notes how closer they are to Homura now and will make sure he gets her to her daughter. He responds to Kurenai that doesn't know or care when she asks what he expects to happen, as he's doing it because it is what Valkyrie wanted. He dodges the punches as Kurenai says kids ruin the world and need to face reality. He countered, asking if the adults who face reality are making the world better. He then sends a gravity-enhanced punch at the Kurenai Dragoon, deactivating his Ether Gear at the last moment to leave an indent. He states that he was sure Kurenai was not making things any better, from what he's seen of the Labor District.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Shiki Granbell was a lean toned young male human who was of average height. He spiky black hair that partially covered his ears along with slanted dark eyes and thin eyebrows. Initially, he only went by the name Shiki and had on last name with Rebecca deciding to give him the name Granbell after the planet he called home. He came to inherit the title of the Demon King (魔王 Maō?) from his adoptive grandfather.
Unlike some humans, Shiki saw robots as living beings capable of emotions and were alive themselves. As such, he never treated them badly and was angered to see if a robot was handled as an object instead of being a person.
He held a strong sense of loyalty and refused to leave Granbell for many years as he believed he had to take care of the robots of the park as they were his friends.
Shiki had said that he did not follow rules in matters relating to his friends as they were more important than that. He had said that he was not some hero fighting for justice but rather fought against anyone that hurt his friends.
Though generally fearless, it was shown that he had a fear of insects and bugs.
It is also shown that Shiki had developed a perverted side, which first started at Granbell when he saw Rebecca for the first time. However, it seemed to had gotten worse over time thanks to Weisz's influence, to the point he becomes ‘lustful’.
Powers and abilities
It was shown that he had great physical strength to the point that he was able to push someone back with a single punch.
As he was growing up, he came to be equipped with Ether Gear (エーテルギア Ēteru Gia?) that allowed him to manipulate the natural energy of Ether (エーテル Ēteru?). In his case, Shiki came to inherit Ziggy's power which was Satan Gravity (サタングラビティ Satan Gurabiti) that allowed him to control and manipulate gravity. This allowed him to achieve a variety of feats with this power such as changing the direction of gravitational force around himself. With this, he was able to stick to walls and impart this power to another person that was near him. Alternatively, he could nullify the effects of gravity allowing him to float in the air or make objects and people weightless to a certain extent. When using Ether Gear, his strength was magnified to the point that a single gravity punch caused enough sheer force and blunt damage to send an opponent flying or destroy the ground beneath them. According to Hermit, Shiki's physical strength was recorded to be 2000 to 2500.
With his power, he was able to perform a number of techniques that included:
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Fist (魔械流 重拳 Makai-ryū: Jūken) : Shiki's arm began to glow for a brief moment and then he punched his opponent with enough force to rupture the ground in several places and destroying nearby buildings.
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Fist Frenzy (魔械流 重拳乱舞 Makai-ryū: Jūken Ranbu) :
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Center (魔械流 重心 Makai-ryū: Jūshin) : an immense amount of force was exerted on an airborne target by boosting its gravity thus pulling the target to the ground.
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Wave (魔械流 重力波 Makai-ryū: Jūryokuha) : by placing his palms on on the ground, Shiki was able to create a spiral force that pulled targets towards him.
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Windmill Kick (魔械流 重旋脚 Makai-ryū: Jūsen Kyaku) :
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Cannon (魔械流 重弾 Makai-ryū: Jūdan) :
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Comet (魔械流 重彗星 Makai-ryū: Jūsuisei) :
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Tackle (魔械流 重身 Makai-ryū Jūshin) :
- Magimech Attack: Gravity Impact (魔械流 グラビティインパクト Makai-ryū: Gurabiti Inpakuto) :
Shiki was able to enter into a more advanced powered Ether Gear state called Overdrive (オーバードライブ Ōbādoraibu). This allowed Ether energy to be channelled to all across his body and made him much more powerfl. As an experienced enough Ether Gear user, Shiki could access a pseudo form of Overdrive, causing a basic transformation, where his hair and skin color changed to a lighter shade, light green Ether markings spread across his body, and a pair of energy horns on his head, identifying him as the new Demon King. In this form, Shiki's physical and Ether abilities are greatly augmented, making it possible for him to use Satan Gravity techniques to the maximum. However, his rudimentary grasp of Overdrive could not match Drakken Joe, who comprehended its true function. After having memories of his death from World No. 29, Shiki could access his Overdrive to the fullest, assuming a transformation that truly identifies him as the Demon King. His hair becomes white, both his arms are darkened with purple Ether markings, and a pair of black horns with the same markings appear out of his head. His clothing also changed into a sleeveless, high-collared tunic and his bandage is gone, revealing a small scar.
As an Ether Gear user, he came to learn that he was unable to use his powers if his hands were tied up. It was shown that sufficiently powerful EMP attacks were capable of shutting down his Ether Gear.
At Weisz's House, he came to acquire X-Ray Goggles that allowed him to see through objects including clothing.
From Elsie Crimson, he gained the Edens Zero (エデンズ・ゼロ Edenzu Zero?) that was a large spacefaring vessel that once belonged to Demon King Ziggy.
He would later become a member of the Oración Seis Galáctica (銀河六魔将 Ginga Rokumashō, lit. "Galaxy's Six Demon Generals") a group that was stated to be the cosmos's strongest warriors, being renowned for crushing entire planets.
