- Planet of the Apes (Films): A plague killed hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs. Hundreds of thousands more had to be put to death to prevent further spread of the plague. During this time that in order to replace lost pets, people turn to keeping apes. (The original history mentioned in Escape from the Planet of the Apes and established in the Planet of the Apes 40th Anniversary Collection Blue-Ray set.)
