Biography

Pre-Crisis

Ace

Shortly after this, Ace was able to rescue Batman and Robin from a deadly trap created by the criminal known as Cat-Man. Then, Ace was granted super-powers by Bat-Mite, but a twist of fate made the Bat-Hound obedient to criminals until Bat-Mite reversed his spells' effect. (Detective Comics v1 #318)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Ace

Years later, Wayne acquired a mastiff which had originally been a guide dog belonging to a blind Native American named Black Wolf. The dog remained most of the time in the Batcave along with Harold and they kept each other company, specially during the time when Jean-Paul Valley took over the mantle of the Bat. (Batman v1 #500)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different series of events.

It was shown that the dog was one of several taken by the Joker who dressed them up in costumes that indicated a different playing card with this one being the ace. Joker later abandoned the dogs as part of some joke with Ace being the only survivor with the others being dead by the time the GCPD and Batman arrived. The dog was taken to the Gotham Pound where the staff intended to put the dog down but Alfred Pennyworth arrived on the scene where he paid a sum of money to purchase Ace. Initially, the dog was highly aggressive with her being confrontational and attacking others necessitating Alfred to engage in training over the span of months as he intended to present the dog as a companion as well as gift to Bruce Wayne. Though Wayne believed the dog was broken, by the time of Christmas Ace was accepted by his master and well-trained with him being referred to as a Bat-Hound due to Alfred's efforts. Television

  • In Batman Beyond, Ace appeared in the 1990s animated television series in the DC Animated Universe where the vocal effects were done by actor Frank Welker. This version was a Great Dane mix who was involved in an illegal dog fighting ring as a puppy, but eventually escaped and was adopted by an elderly Bruce Wayne, becoming his sole companion in Wayne Manor until they meet Terry McGinnis. Bruce's assistant and protégé, seemed to be the only other person with whom Ace was ever able to connect with. At first, Ace was untrusting towards Terry, but as time went on both Ace and Terry developed a close bond of their own. Terry earned Ace's affection and loyalty. In Terry's opinion, this was one of the small rewards being Batman had brought him. Ace played a role in defeating the new Joker when he damaged the controls for his new satellite weapon system.
  • In Krypto the Superdog, Ace appeared in the setting of the animated television series where he was voiced by actor Scott McNeil. Similar to Batman, this version employed various gadgets and equipment in his crime-fighting efforts, sees himself as Batman's partner instead of his pet, and battles the pets of Batman's rogues gallery such as the Joker's hyenas, Bud and Lou, the Penguin's Bad News Birds, and Catwoman's pet cat Isis. Additionally, he joins the Dog Star Patrol later in the series.
  • In Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Ace appeared in the setting of the animated television series with vocal effects provided by actor Dee Bradley Baker. Ace the Bat-hound was Batman’s dog who assisted him in fighting crime. In the episode “Legends of the Dark Mite” he helps Batman fight Catman and his tiger. After scaring the tiger away he traps Catman in a tree and Batman gives him a bat shaped dog treat. In the main episode, Bat Mite disguises himself as Ace to trick Batman. At the episode, the real Ace appears and Batman presses his collar to make sure he is the real thing. In the Siege of Starro, Part One, Ace chases Booster Gold out of the Batcave on Batman's orders. Later when The Faceless Hunter shows up Ace attacks his and manages to get hit on him before The Faceless Hunter counterattacks and places a starro clone on his face. It is assumed that Ace was freed after Starro was defeated.

Films

  • In Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts, a robotic Ace appeared in the setting of the animated film. Ace was originally one of the Penguin's robotic dogs that were build to assist a group if animal-themed villains, beside a few other robotic animals. Knowing that the robot was programmed to attack him, Batman uses himself as a distract while his allies took the robotic animals out. Red Robin then reprograms the dg to their side.
  • In DC League of Super-Pets, Ace appeared in the setting of the animated film where he was voiced by actor Kevin Hart. This version was a boxer who, as a puppy, was given to a shelter by his adoptive family after he bit the infant daughter's arm while saving her from falling down a flight of stairs. In the present, he was exposed to orange Kryptonite, gaining super-strength and invulnerability, and joins forces with Krypto and other empowered shelter pets to rescue the Justice League. Following this, Ace was adopted by Batman and becomes a founding member of the titular League of Super-Pets.

Video games

  • In Batman: Arkham Knight, Ace was referenced in the setting of the Arkhamverse video game. During Scarecrow and the Arkham Knight's coordinated attack on Gotham, Ace's dog bowl could be found in Bruce Wayne's office in Wayne Enterprises.
  • In DC Legends, Ace was referenced in an item in the setting of the mobile video game.
