Biography

Achebe

It was claimed that he was once an unnamed peasant farmer, living with his family in the small African country of Ghudaza. One day, rebel guerrillas from the neighboring country of Ujanka were forced over the border onto Bob's farm. Achebe helped to nurse the fighters back to health, but his wife fell in love with the rebels' leader. The guerrillas took his wife with them when they left, leaving Achebe for dead after stabbing him 32 times and his farm razed to the ground. Achebe was driven insane with hatred, and he offered his soul to make a deal with the Devil. Achebe then proceeded to track down anyone associated with his wife and the rebels, killing each one by stabbing them 32 times and razing their livelihoods to the ground. (Black Panther v3 #3) It was known that Achebe attended Yale University, acquiring multiple degrees. Achebe then returned to Ghudaza and, by allying with certain factions of United States intelligence, the Russian mob, and the members of the Volcan Domuyan Secret Service, helped to erupt the country into ethnic wars that forced thousands of refugees into Wakanda. (Black Panther v3 #9) Achebe placed himself in a refugee camp that emigrated to the African nation of Wakanda, ruled by the hero Black Panther. (Black Panther v3 #3)

When Black Panther established a refugee camp on the outskirts of Wakanda for those seeking asylum from the conflict, Achebe infiltrated it and exacerbated unease between the refugees and the Wakandans. Achebe then lured Black Panther out of Wakanda by corrupting one of his charities situated in America and by having the organization's 'poster child' killed. (Black Panther v3 #2) While Black Panther is preoccupied in the United States, Achebe leads an uprising in the African refugee camp and appoints himself head of the provisional government that overtakes Wakanda. (Black Panther v3 #4) Achebe subjects Wakanda to his deranged decrees, which worsen after his connection to Mephisto is severed by the cunning of Black Panther. Achebe's forces weaken without Mephisto's backing, though he retains his position as prime minister by promising to share power with Black Panther's stepmother, Ramonda, so long as Black Panther remains in America. (Black Panther v3 #5) Achebe later tries to assassinate Black Panther by having his allies in the United States place a bomb on a bystander and a remotely controllable exoskeleton on Black Panther's ex-fiancée, Monica. Black Panther was able to defuse the explosive and free Monica from the exoskeleton with the help of the Avengers. (Black Panther v3 #8)

While Ramonda was distracted, Achebe came to knock her out and acquires her codes for the Prowlers who were the robotic defenders of Wakanda. (Black Panther v3 #10) Achebe unleashes the reprogrammed Prowlers, covers himself in explosives, and confronts Black Panther and his friend Everett K. Ross when they reach Wakanda. (Black Panther v3 #11) Achebe forces Black Panther and Ross into a deathtrap based on a claw machine, which they later escape from, while he flees Wakanda. (Black Panther v3 #12)

Notes

  • Achebe was created by Christopher Priest and Mark Texeira where he made his first appearance in Black Panther v3 #3 (January, 1999).
  • In a commentary on his website, Priest stated that, "Two brief mentions of villains and villainy: Achebe, who is baldly the Joker to Panther's Batman (even appearing so in Ross's nightmare in issue #22), actually sprung more out of thoughts of Hannibal Lechter or Hans Gruber (the brilliant villain from Die Hard). Achebe's unpredictable nature, his insanity, made him the perfect foil for Panther- a methodical and analytical genius whose powers were nulled by Achebe's wackiness. Tying Achebe briefly into the malevolent Mephisto and the CIA (not sure which was scarier), we made Achebe an accomplice to the ethnical cleansing and racial genocide going on in neighboring Ghudaza; a holocaust begun for the simple purpose of inserting Achebe into Wakanda in a coup attempt. Achebe was the only character in the book who did not defer to Panther, but, rather, gleefully egged him on. Achebe is a joy to write, and Joe's designs (with the huge ears and the eternal, mocking grin) really brought Achebe to life for me."

Alternate Versions

  • In Black Panther v3 #36 (2001), an alternate version of Achebe was shown to exist in a possible future of The Once and Future King. among the villains recruited by T'Charra to help him kill and usurp his father, an elderly Black Panther. Achebe and the other criminals are defeated by Black Panther's allies Brother Voodoo, Falcon, and Luke Cage.
