History

The Alien Engine (A.E.) Virus (A・Eウィルス(エイリアンエンジン), Eirian Enjin Uirusu) was a mysterious disease that emerged on Earth in the 27th century. It was stated that the virus had emerged from Mars and had come to Earth where it began infecting humans. First case of the virus began to appear around 40 years ago with the numbers of infected increasingly drastically in the span of 20 years. Those infected suffered from a 100% mortality rate and by 2619 the existence of the virus had not been made public by the nations of Earth. Due to its spread, the survival of humanity was at stake with the need for a cure. As the virus was not native to Earth, it could not be cultivated and used to create a vaccine. Thus, U-NASA established an expedition consisting of six squads that had undergone the Mosaic Organ Operation who were tasked with going to Mars to collect samples of the virus which launched in 2620. The samples were present in the newly evolved humanoid insectoid creatures known as the Terraformars.

With the execution of Plan Delta, the Annex-1 crewmen were charged with collecting Terraformars to gather samples of the Mars virus. These were meant to be taken to the Annex-1 virus labs in order to develop a cure for the Alien Engine Virus.

Overview

Due to the virus, the A.E. Virus operated similar to other such infections as being unable to reproduce by itself. Instead, it required a host in order to use the native cells to reproduce. Despite being a new viral strain on Earth, there were not examples of the infection in the native plant or animal life on that world. Those infected suffered from a 100% mortality rate as the virus caused their bodily functions to shut down.
