History

The Alin were an ancient race that were possibly the most ancient inhabitants and perhaps well established of the civilizations on the world of Aio. It was thought by scholars that the city of Azar Harif was the first 'modern' city in the world. In time, the Alin nation grew in power and prestige where they became masters of magic allowing them to pierce through the veil between the mortal plan of existence into the next.

A millennium ago, the entity known as Sawu dabbled in magical forces that were even his power to control. He had attempted to fuse fire and sand using spells through the use of powers that had been lost in antiquity. Though he succeeded, this came at a cost with corruption that forever changed him into a being composed of Dark Glass. This was a substance that was tough but dangerous that gave great abilities to the user but drove them towards insanity. In the aftermath, a series of bloody wars were fought against him that nearly drove the Alin people to annihilation. However, they were ultimately able to defeat Sawu and his glass forces with the entity being imprisoned in his home city of Mezekesh. To keep him trapped, the Alin had the city itself buried beneath the sands in the hopes that it would never rise again. Despite his actions, elements of the glass magic that Sawu had used later became incorporated into the armies of the Alin that provided them with great power.

Overview

In appearance, the Alin were humans that had formed a civilization in the deserts of their world.

Alin warriors had been trained to the peak of physical perfection and had incorporated creatures composed entirely of fire that added to their unprecedented military flexibility.

In terms of military, the Alin made use of:

  • Desert Walkers : These basic foot soldiers served as the foundation of the Alin army and were feared for their ability to attack with ruthless aggression with a disregard for personal safety. More elite forces among their ranks were the Desert Striders who had perfected the art of throwing their Suarang curved scimitar-blades with deadly accuracy at great distances. A sufficiently large force of Desert Walkers were able to capture a city of any size rapidly.
  • Scorpions : The Alin had bred and domesticated these giant Scorpion beasts of the dunes for centuries. They were bred for speed, size and power with hordes of Scorpions being capable of following commands whilst their pincers could snap swords in two. Their pincers were like steel that could easily kill their enemies whilst their lightning-fast stingers could strike at a range of ten feet away with them delivering a debilitating poison. The armoured carapaces made them ideal to mow down enemy soldiers that dared to mass in formation.
  • Heartseekers : Riding on Dune Mantas, the Heartseekers used bows with them mixing powerful earth magic into their weapons to give their arrows more power and longer range. This made them effective against countering aerial attacks. Those children that displayed a prowess with the bow were trained from a young age with many becoming elite Heartseekers with all to date being women. Those that went through such further training could target small critical areas in a target allowing them to slay even the most massive of foes with a single shot.
  • Salamanders : creatures of great size, native to the Kalahese Desert and tamed by the Alin. It jets a huge amount of fire at enemies, setting them on fire.
  • Afreet : molten, flying creature that knows rudimentary fire magic.
  • Rukh :
  • Glass Golem : homunculi of beast and dark glass are considered by some to be an abomination, but their power is well known on the battlefield. They are capable of tearing shards of glass from their own bodies and hurling them with devastating force at enemy formations; these shards are quickly regenerated to supply further ammunition. Golems that reach a level of extreme age, experience, and power, command the ability to destroy themselves in an explosive shower of glass that is capable of wiping out whole formations of enemy footsoldiers.
  • Glass Spider : legendary creatures brought to life, Rukhs were first summoned from the plane of fire a millennia ago. These fiery beings were so potent that they could not be effectively used in battle. Slowly over the centuries, they have been bred and tamed with magic. They resemble a bird crossed with a large flying lizard. When allowed to unleash their full power, the Rukh can dive into the ground and apparently destroy itself, taking any nearby targets with it. A roiling cloud is all that is left of them until their magic and otherworldly powers allow them regenerate in the lingering smoke and swoop away to attack again.

Their magic allowed them to conjure up entire armies from nothing and they cared little for their demise.

Buildings such as the Sand Spire were protected by the lurking Sand Horrors that assembled forces of the desert to attack enemies that strayed too near them. They were considered the oldest and most established part of the Alin army as they had been part of their fighting forces since they unified as a nation. From the Circle of Sand, the Alin came to recruit some of their warriors such as the Heartseekers.

Among their most powerful creations was the Glass Dragon. Roaming the desert skies, in service of the Alin, comes a beast of gleaming majesty of all mythical beasts is a prime example of the many creatures that the desert lord of the Alin can raise from the sands at any given moment.

Within the Kalahese desert, their capital city was Azar Harif.

Mezekesh, also known as the City of Genies, was built by the Alin and was once a city almost as great as Azar Harif itself. The City of Genies was a great city, but after its conquest by the Dark Alin it was deserted. It served later as a prison for the corrupted Sawu.
