History

The Alliance was the unified nations that formed on the world of Azeroth. It began as the Alliance of Lordaeron that consisted of the kingdoms of man. Following the destruction of the Kingdom of Stormwind by the Orcish Horde during the First War, its survivors fled to Lordaeron. Realizing the threat the orcs posed, Regent Lord Anduin Lothar, leader of Azeroth's refugees, was able to convince the leaders of the other human kingdoms to unify against the orcs as the Alliance. The Wildhammer dwarves of Aerie Peak and high elves also soon joined the Alliance, as well as the gnomes of Gnomeregan and the Ironforge dwarves later in the war. The Alliance — under the leadership of Sir Anduin Lothar as its Supreme Allied Commander — ultimately defeated the Old Horde during the battle of Blackrock Spire. Although Anduin Lothar was slain by Warchief Orgrim Doomhammer, his death inspired Turalyon to push the Alliance to victory. Turalyon's forces succeeded in destroying the Dark Portal, the mystical gateway that connected the orcs to their homeworld of Draenor. Cut off from its reinforcements and fractured by infighting, the Horde finally buckled in upon itself and fell before the might of the Alliance, thus ending the Second War. In time, it was joined by the kingdoms of the Dwarves and the High Elves.

The scattered orc clans were quickly rounded up and placed within guarded internment camps under the Alliance Internment Act. Though it seemed that the Horde had been defeated for good, some remained highly skeptical that peace would last. Khadgar, now an Archmage of some renown, convinced the Alliance high command to build the fortress of Nethergarde Keep that would watch over the ruins of the Dark Portal and ensure that there would be no further invasions from Draenor.

Events of the Third War led to an alliance with both the night elves, Alliance refugees, and the Horde. This alliance of Azeroth's defenders defeated the Burning Legion at the Battle of Mount Hyjal. While the night elves and Kalimdor Alliance, led by Theramore, became permanent, tensions began to erupt with the Horde. At the crux of the Third War, the corrupted scion of Lordaeron Prince Arthas Menethil laid the Alliance of Lordaeron to waste - beginning with the murder of his father and the annihilation of Lordaeron itself. He attacked Quel'Thalas shortly after, ransacking the elven homeland and nearly scouring the high elves from Azeroth. The survivors of this massacre proclaimed themselves blood elves in honor of their peoples' fall, and joined the Alliance resistance in Lordaeron prior to abandoning it due to racism on behalf of its commander. The Alliance resistance also fell apart after falling to treachery from Sylvanas Windrunner and her Forsaken.

Overview

In appearance, the Alliance was not a uniform governmental body, but rather a coalition of mutual military and economic aid between many member states, consisting of different races across Azeroth. Diplomacy is key within the Alliance, as the leaders of each member state hold supreme authority over their own politics, including their internal laws, economy, and military forces. The respective leaders hold no obligations to lend these resources to the faction's common cause, and can use them to accomplish their own interests without any consequences in their relationship with the allied powers.

The Grand Alliance consisted of the following kingdoms:

  • Kingdom of Stormwind
  • Kingdom of Lordaeron
  • Kingdom of Stromgarde
  • Admiralty of Kul Tiras
  • Kingdom of Gilneas
  • Magocracy of Dalaran
  • Kingdom of Alterac

Bodies that existed within the Alliance included:

  • Council of Seven Nations :
  • Church of the Holy Light :
  • Knights of the Silver Hand :

Proud and noble, courageous and wise, the Alliance races work together to preserve order in Azeroth. The Alliance is driven by honor and tradition and are bound together by a sense of brotherhood and a deep commitment to uphold their common noble ideals.

While a huge portion of the Alliance's military power consists of representatives from the faction's member states, there are also several examples of organizations within the Alliance which do not belong to any of the member states and instead of answering to a particular racial leader, they are organized by the leader of the Alliance, the High King of Stormwind, and his advisors. However, while these organizations are not tied directly to any of the member states, the sub-organizations within them are often sent by one of the member states.
