History
The Allied Resistance Earth Squadrons (A.R.E.S.) was a joint military organization formed from the combined nations of Earth in the 20th century. Its formation came after the invasion of the planet by the Martians who were only defeated by infection from germs native to the world. A devastated mankind would rebuild and reverse engineer some of the alien technology with A.R.E.S. being formed as a counter-Martian agency to combat a future such invasion. In 1914, A.R.E.S. faced some division when Europe began to face hostilities among its various nation states causing a division in loyalty within the organization. To continue their readiness, A.R.E.S. deployed a training group for a mock War Game with the newest generation of Tripods. The War Game was interrupted when the Martians returned after becoming immune to Earth's germs and began their second invasion of the planet. Various Human Tripods were destroyed by the alien invaders in the training exercise with A.R.E.S. suffering heavy losses before defeating the enemy. It was later determined that the Martians had begun a mass invasion of the entire world forcing A.R.E.S. to counterattack and react to their landings.
Overview
Among the equipment included in its arsenal were their own version of the Martian Tripod vehicles. This led to the creation of steam-powered machines that were equipped with both conventional human weapons and reverse engineered alien death rays. The latest generation were the Achilles-class battle tripod that were 65 feet tall tripedal warmachines that were armed with heavy machine guns, six light rockets, a heat ray and a 88 millimeter cannon. A smaller version of these machines known as the Spartan-class Tripod served as fast scouts for A.R.E.S. who deployed them for recon missions and armed with heavy machine guns.
A.R.E.S. also had constructed large airships such as the Leviathan that were able to deploy an entire squadron of Tripods along with flights of biplanes. These flying craft had numerous cannons for defense but largely relied on its fighter squadrons for protection against enemy fighters. Its heaviest armament was a reverse engineered Martian heat ray that was deployed from the top and fired concentrated powerful blasts able to destroy or heavily damage enemy airships. Planes were used that had modified thrusters that boosted their speed and used machine guns, rockets along with a heat ray but these required a three minute cool down after use. Various types of fighters were used that included the StormCrow.
