Biography

Jason Strongbow

As a representative of the Navajo Nation of Native Americans, he attempted to stop a mining company from excavating a mountain sacred to the tribe by obtaining a court order. Failing in that, he led a peaceful protest group at the mining site. When the night watchman panicked and shot a protester, Strongbow followed him into the mine. There, he discovered that the mining company was in league with Ulysses Klaw who sought uranium found in the mine to fortify his sonic powers. Strongbow also discovered his brother, Ward, who did not share his ideas of preserving the tribal grounds, and an argument between them soon led to violence. (Marvel Two-In-One Annual v1 #6)

As the American Eagle, Jason Strongbow devoted himself to defending both his homeland and those who could not defend themselves. His first major confrontation as a costumed hero came when he clashed with the Thing, who had been misled into aiding Roxxon’s operations. Misunderstanding one another’s motives, the two fought fiercely until Jason revealed the truth about Roxxon’s activities, convincing the Thing to side with him against their mutual enemy. This unlikely alliance set the tone for Jason’s future career—he was a man who operated independently of traditional superhero networks, guided by his own principles rather than public acclaim. Though initially wary of outsiders, his efforts earned him respect among heroes such as Captain America, who admired his sense of duty and integrity. Over time, Jason broadened his mission beyond his reservation, fighting organized crime and corporate corruption across the United States while remaining deeply tied to his cultural heritage and his role as a guardian of Native sovereignty. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #64)

Upon arriving in Chicago, he met with Steel Spider who first believed Strongbow to be part of the government forces sent to apprehend him. American Eagle revealed that he had come to help curb Osnick's vigilante activity as he feared it would bring about a harsh response from the authorities. However, they were too late as the Thunderbolts arrived thus forcing Jason to team up with Steel Spider to fight them. American Eagle fired an arrow that pinned Karla Sofen to the dropship thus leaving her out of the fight. (Thunderbolts v1 #114) His independence brought him into conflict with S.H.I.E.L.D. and other agencies, though his efforts to protect his reservation often placed him in reluctant cooperation with larger heroes. When the Thunderbolts attempted to capture him for defying registration, Jason single-handedly overpowered Songbird, Moonstone, and Bullseye in close combat, demonstrating both his raw power and his disciplined restraint. Despite being offered repeated opportunities to join government teams or Avengers initiatives, Jason declined, maintaining his autonomy as a self-appointed champion of the oppressed. (Thunderbolts v1 #115)

Shortly afterward he turned away the Desert Stars who were in pursuit of Cottonmouth whose rampage had taken him onto the Rez, Eagle's territory. Finding that Cottonmouth had taken a hostage, Jason defused the situation and forced Cottonmouth to do some restorative justice as recompense. (American Eagle: Just a Little Old-Fashioned Justice v1 #1)

During Fear Itself, a few drug-dealers took MGH to give them the strength, size, and aura of Natives Americans devils, and create a clash between the natives and their white neighborhood. Their plot was revealed by Jason who also defeated them. (Fear Itself: The Home Front v1 #5)

As the Avengers chairman, T'Challa began to recruit numerous super-powered beings as part of his Agents of Wakanda who served as a support staff for the heroes when they were based at Avengers Mountain. Among those recruited was American Eagle who joined the group. (Avengers v8 #12)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Jason Strongbow was a tall, powerfully built man with bronze skin, long black hair often tied back, and sharp, stoic features reflecting his Navajo heritage. His costume combined modern tactical design with traditional symbolism—a crimson and navy suit adorned with eagle motifs, leather accents, and a winged insignia across his chest. He wore a yellow cowl and mask that left his mouth and chin exposed, while feather-like trim on his gloves and boots evoked his namesake. (Marvel Comics Presents v1 #27)

It was noted that he had a brother by the name of Ward Strongbow. Unlike Jason, Ward did not believe in his people's customs and traditions. In fact, he was perfectly willing to destroy sacred land in order to sell it to outsiders for a profit. (Marvel Two-in-One Annual v1 #6)

Powers and abilities

Originally, Strongbow was noted to had been a normal human being with no inherent powers. This changed though when he was exposed to sonic energy and Uranium when he attempted to protect his people's sacred mountain from Klaw. (Marvel Two-in-One Annual v1 #6)

Jason Strongbow was an enhanced human whose physiology had been altered by exposure to the mutagenic energies beneath the Roxxon mine. As such, his body possessed superhuman strength, endurance, and speed far beyond the limits of ordinary humans. He could lift tremendous weights, leap great distances, and withstand injuries that would incapacitate others. His senses were also heightened, granting him exceptional visual acuity and reflexes that allowed him to react to projectiles and engage multiple opponents simultaneously. Despite these gifts, Jason relied equally on his tactical intelligence and combat training, using his knowledge of terrain, tracking, and hand-to-hand combat to outmaneuver stronger foes. His skills as a hunter and marksman remained integral to his fighting style, reflecting the discipline instilled by his upbringing and cultural heritage. Unlike many heroes empowered by cosmic or scientific forces, Jason viewed his abilities as both a gift and a responsibility—a divine charge to protect his people and the natural world from those who sought to exploit them. (Thunderbolts v1 #116)
