Angel (Thomas Halloway)

Thomas Halloway, born in the late 1870s was the son of a prison warden; his mother died in childbirth. The warden raised Thomas in isolation, in the prison itself, and was instructed by various experts who had taught him 'everything'. (Marvels Project v1 #1) Thomas was also taught by the prisoners, who passed on the secrets of the underworld. When Thomas discovered that one of the prisoners was about to be electrocuted he saved him. For this deed Thomas was dubbed an "angel" by the inmate. Apparently, exposure to this electricity caused a mutation in Thomas that slowed his ageing after he reached adulthood for many years. (Marvel Mystery Handbook 70th Anniversary Special v1 #1)

However, after a bystander was killed during an adventure, the Angel hung up his cape, unwilling to risk more innocent lives in his fight against crime. Still wishing to combat lawlessness and seeking a way to atone for his mistake, he eventually founded a group of trained assassins, the Scourges, who would ambush and murder costumed criminals. Eventually, these acts of vigilantism were stopped by Captain America. To escape U.S. Agent, he faked his own death. (U.S.Agent v1 #4) Thomas Halloway retired and lived on a sprawling estate in Los Angeles. (Captain America v1 #442)

Angel (Simon Halloway)

Simon Halloway

In recent years, Simon fell on hard times and began living on the streets and in the subway tunnels of New York City. Despite his senior citizen status and poor living conditions, Simon retained his physical prowess to some degree. He was murdered by the costumed serial killer, Zeitgeist. (Captain America v1 #442)

Angel (Warren Worthington III)

Warren Worthington III was a member of the wealthy Worthington family, and son of Warren Worthington Jr. and his wife Kathryn. On top of family wealth, Warren was an attractive boy, and seemed naturally skilled at anything he tried.(Uncanny Origins v1 #3) In elementary school, Warren was an exemplary student, and was teased by his classmates who called him "little angel". Warren was obsessed with the sky and birds to the point where it distracted him from social gatherings, earning the ire of his father. (X-Factor v1 #47)

Warren soon moved to New York City, where he decided to use his wings to fight crime as a super-hero called the Avenging Angel. His early activities drew the attention of the news media. (X-Men Origins: Jean Grey v1 #1) By the winter of that year, Warren established himself as a hero, utilizing a gas pellet firing gun to fight crime. One of his earliest recorded instances of crime fighting was when the Avenging Angel busted the Grady Gang. His activities attracted the attention of Charles Xavier once more who was gathering mutants to join his school for the gifted as well as his group the X-Men, who sought to create a world where humans and mutants lived in peace. Xavier sent his first two students, Cyclops and Iceman to greet Warren at his home. Meanwhile, Warren stopped some crooks from stealing a cylinder of radioactive material from the Atomic Institute. The radioactive isotopes in the cylinder began to affect Warren's mind making him increasing paranoid and hostile. (Uncanny Origins v1 #3)

Angel (Angel Salvadore)

Angel Salvadore was fourteen years old when her mutant nature manifested. After a week of being the cause of a foul stench in her bedroom, she was driven out of her home in Wyoming by her abusive step-father. During the night Angel had slept out in the cold, she had formed a cocoon around herself and emerged from it after sprouting a pair of wings. In the following morning, she was awakened by the U-Men, humans who sought to harvest mutant body parts to graft them onto themselves. Though she tried to escape, using her newfound powers, Angel was captured. (New X-Men v1 #118)
