The Anima del Monde is an artifact that features in the video game Knights Contract.

History

The Anima del Monde was a mystical crystal that was believed to be the root of all magic and provided its users the power beyond human understanding. Its existence was known to the compassionate witches that lived at Brocken where originally it was a single crystal with a shrine dedicated to it. But the witches feared what would happen if it fell into the wrong hands and thus their leader, Verdirinde, decided to separate the artifact into seven different shards. These crystalline parts of the Anima del Monde were split between the seven witches and thus fell into the hands of Verdirinde, Straeggle, Trude, Holda, Rapunzel, Trendula and Gretchen. This duty lasted for over a hundred years until the dark sorceror Faust emerged and intended to claim the power for himself. During this time, the Black Plague inflicted Medieval Europe and though the witches tended to the sick - Faust managed to convince the townspeople that they were evil witches that had forged a pact with the Devil. The witches were gathered where Faust convinced each one to hand over their shard of the Anima del Monde. The final seventh piece remained within the hands of Gretchen who knew of Faust's manipulations and hid her shard whilst she was executed by Heinrich Hofmann.

Despite her death, Gretchen used her shard to anchor her soul into the body of a homonculus crafted by her disciples which allowed her to be reincarnated a century later. However, by this time, Faust had not ended in his quest to reclaim the pieces of the Anima del Monde and thus resurrected the slain witches in order to spread terror across the lands. This was with the intention of stealing Gretchen's remaining shard in order to reforge the magical crystal so that he could cast the curse of immortality on himself. To combat his machinations, Gretchen intended to steal back the stolen pieces in order to prevent them from being used for evil purposes. During a confrontation against Faust, Hofmann was temporarily paralysed by a shard from the crystal that was in Fausts hands whereupon Heinrich learnt of the true nature of the Anima del Monde. To accomplish her mission, Gretchen intended to seal away the Anima del Monde on Walpurgis Night which was the only time when the crystal could be sealed away.

Overview

Originally, the Anima del Monde was a large magical crystal before it was split into multiple small fragments that could fit into the hand of a human being. The power of the shards was enough to keep the disembodied soul of the user within a homunculus body.
