History

Pre-Crisis

The Appellaxians

Each alien warrior possessed a different power or ability, and attacked a different portion of Earth, which drew the individual attention of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter. While most of the Appellaxian invaders were defeated by the superheroes individually, the heroes themselves fell prey one by one to a single competitor's attack; they soon discovered that only by working together could they defeat the competitor. Afterwards, the group decided that they should form a permanent organization to confront menaces that required a similar pooling of resources, and dubbed themselves the Justice League of America. (Justice League of America v1 #9)

Several years later, the Appellaxians would attack the League again. Through a powerful post-hypnotic suggestion, the seven founding members were turned into mind-controlled pawns, forced to reassemble the seven Appellax meteorites in which the aliens first came to Earth. Seed-clone duplicate forms of the original Appellaxian invaders burst out of the gathered meteorites and easily defeated the original Leaguers. Nonetheless, veteran and new members teamed to beat the aliens, and hurled their remains into the Sun. (Justice League of America v1 #200)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. The Appellaxians

In a prior case, a trial of combat was held to determine who killed the former Kalar and thus became their successor. The event last for 4 years and devastated 85% of the planetary population as a result. (Secret Origins v2 #32)

Some years ago, a Appellaxian killed his Kalar. By their laws the killer would be the next Kalar. Since seven natives claimed the kill, a contest was opened. The consciousness of the seven were transferred to synthetical bodies, each possessed a different power or ability, and were sent to Earth to see who could conquer the planet first, as a means of determining who would become the new ruler of their home planet. Each warrior attacked a different portion of Earth, which drew the individual attention of various heroes, who had recently started their careers: the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Black Canary and the Martian Manhunter. While most of the Appellaxian invaders were defeated by the superheroes individually, the heroes themselves fell prey one by one to a single competitor's attack; they soon discovered that only by working together could they defeat the competitor. In the North Pole, the group would come only in time to see Superman defeating the last creature and flying away before any talk. Afterwards, the remaining heroes decided that they should form a permanent organization to confront menaces that required a similar pooling of resources, and dubbed themselves the Justice League of America. (Secret Origins v2 #32)

Following an undetermined time since their defeat from the Justice League, the Appellaxians repented of their warlike ways. However, this shift in their culture created reactionaries in which one named Orkus led another invasion of Earth by using the planet as their battle form. But ultimately the Justice League once again defeated the rogue Appellaxians and returned them to their homeworld. (JLA Incarnations v1 #7)

Overview

Leadership of their people was held by a figure who was known as the Kalar. (Secret Origins v2 #32)

The laws of Appellax stated that the person who killed the Kalar became the next Kalar. However, when there was dispute on who was the killer then a trial was combat was held between them as per their tradition of warfare. Originally, these were held on Appellax itself but after it was devastated in a previous trial by combat it was then decided to hold these contests on other worlds. (Secret Origins v2 #32)
