Biography

Origin

Zachary Gate was a male human born in the modern age where he was a descendant of the Gates family who were a family of architects that came to Gotham City. (Batman: The Gates of Gotham v1 #5)

After being taken to prison, Nicholas Gate came to write a journal where he blamed the founding families of Gotham for the 'murder' of his brother with these being detailed whilst he was confined at Arkham Asylum. In the decades afterwards, descendants of the Gates continued until the modern age when Zachary Gate was born where he suffered from psychosis and found the journal of his ancestor. Thus, he came to blame the elites of Gotham for forgetting the Gates family and sought to take his revenge against the city where h took the name of the Architect. (Batman: The Gates of Gotham v1 #5)

With Elliot as his captive, the Architect then had him placed at Wayne Tower where he made a modified dead man's switch that activated a timer alongside similar bombs through the city. Despite the efforts of the Bat Family, they were unable to stop the bombs from detonating though they managed to succeed in saving bystanders with this including Tommy Elliot. (Batman: The Gates of Gotham v1 #2)

He placed explosives at the base of the bridge when Batman confronted him with this fight being to take his attention whilst the Bat Family moved to disarm the bombs. The Dark Knight used grapple lines to pin the villain to the bridge whilst he confronted him about his identity along with the actions of Nicholas Gate. (Batman: The Gates of Gotham v1 #5)

Upon his arrest, he was taken to Arkham Asylum where Dillon's true identity as Zachary Gate was discovered. (Batman: The Gates of Gotham v1 #5)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

After being stopped some time ago by the Batman Family, Zachary Gate remained imprisoned until he was released by Jason Bard, the acting commissioner claiming that his plans with "Mother" required an architect. He was also given back his armor at this time. (Batman Eternal v1 #21) He first struck at the Beacon Tower construction site, where he brought several men with him and killed various crew members before Gate introduced himself to the project's architect Andrew Trondsen as the Architect. When Trondsen demanded to know what the Architect was doing to his building, the saboteur responds that this was actually his building, as he had been rewriting the plans for the Tower for months in order to design its true nature. With the arrival of Batman, he left Trondsen alone to deal with him, planning on getting back to him later. However, he was taken down with explosive Batarangs to his armor, and Batman freed Trondsen. After that rescue, Batman asked who Gate was working for. Unfortunately, due to Gate's insanity, he responded that he was only working for his family's legacy, and that Trondsen and the Beacon were just a part of something else. Lastly, he explained that the building was speaking in whispers with its resonance, cluing Batman in that Hush had attacked Alfred. (Batman Eternal v1 #22) After his defeat, Gate was incensed to learn that his cohort, Hush, had killed Trondsen, despite promising to leave him to Gate. (Batman Eternal v1 #23)
