Astragard is a settlement that features in the Disney movie The Island at the Top of the World.

Overview

Astragard was an ancient lost colony of Vikings that became separated from the mainland at an unspecified point in the past. After journeying to the Artic, they discovered a lush island situated in the region which they named Astragard. Cut off from the rest of the world, this colony retained its culture and traditions of its past when the main Viking culture was lost over the centuries. There, they remained undisturbed and lived a somewhat peaceful existence with none being aware of their existence - an arrangement that they decided to brutally enforce in order to maintain their way of life. Being in the Artic, one of the locations near the settlement of Astragard was the Whales Graveyard that was populated by dangerous Killer Whales.

In 1907, an expedition was set up in order to explore the Artic which consisted of Scandinavian-American archaeologist Professor Ivarsson and a French Inventor/Aeronaut called Captain Brieux. The latter of the pair provided transportation in the form of a dirgible known as the Hyperion and were later joined by an Eskimo called Oomiak. After being separated from one another, the expedition unwittingly discovered the island of Astragard located within the region. They were ultimately captured and faced death by the command of Godi. The expedition members managed to escape with the help of a beautiful Viking woman called Freya. During the chase, the Vikings of Astragard made it clear that they were not going to allow the expedition members to return back to the rest of the world.

However, an arrangement was made that involved the ancient Viking custom where one of the expedition members would remain behind as a hostage who became a guest of the colony. Ultimately, Ivarsson willingly volunteered to stay behind in order to pursue his study of the ancient Viking culture and further stated that if the world ever destroyed itself, then places like Astragard would become the last refuge for mankind.
