Biography

Azuma Genkaku (Japanese: 東 弦角, Hepburn: Genkaku Azuma)

In his childhood, Genkaku was part of a Buddhist Temple where he befriended and nursed an injured kitten. During his days at the temple, the other monks-in-training would harass him, beat him, and even rape and molest him. When he returned to the Buddist temple, the Bhikku would ask why Genkaku had been in another fight saying, "It seems you can only sow and reap evil, Genkaku." To which Genkaku merely remarks, "I have no hate. They are probably suffering. They are weak, unfortunate, foolish people living in a fanatical world." Genkaku then prays to Buddha wondering if there is any way to give those people salvation. He asks, "Why did you decide death should be 'painful' without experiencing it yourself?". After the Great Tokyo Earthquake, Genkaku finds the dead body of the kitten he was taking care of. He then finds one of the monks that bullied him, injured and lying under a pile of rubble, pleading for Genkaku to save him. Later on, the Bhikku returns to the temple to search for survivors; instead, he finds Genkaku sitting under a shrine composed of the mutilated corpses of the other monks. Genkaku turns to him and proclaims, "I have understood the 'salvation' of the living." Genkaku was finally convinced that the only way to be saved from the world is to be taken away from it. Genkaku was then taken to Deadman Wonderland where he was chosen by Tamaki to be trained as an Undertaker for at least three years. Two years before the start of the series, he was the one who killed Nagi Kengamine's wife. This caused Nagi to go on a rampage killing twenty-two of Genkaku's Undertaker soldiers. During this attack on the Undertakers, Genkaku was hiding in a locker, scared. From this day forward, he hoped to turn Nagi to the Undertakers' cause.

Genkaku makes his debut accompanying Tamaki, who encounters Yō in G Ward. Yō notices Genkaku and asks if he's a monk. Genkaku replies that he's an "uber monk". Tamaki informs Yō that in the G Ward, it is impossible to buy your way out of prison using Cast Points, implying he can't buy his sister out of prison. This angers Yō and he attempts to attack Tamaki for essentially knowing all of his hard work of collecting CP was in vain. Genkaku intervenes and attacks Yō several times with his guitar. Tamaki leaves asking Genkaku to take care of Scar Chain.

The Owl decided to forfeit the match leading to his wife winning by default but she refused to participate in the penalty game. As a result, Genkaku was responsible for killing her. After killing Nagi Kengamine's wife, the Owl went into a psychotic rage and went on a rampage in the prison where he started to kill the guards. Azuma Genkaku only managed to survive by hiding in one of the equipment storage cabinets where he witnessed the bloodbath. According to Genkaku, he urinated on himself in fear at the carnage yet at the same time he was sexually excited at the brutality conducted by Kengamine.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Azuma Genkaku was a young man in his mid 20s with pale skin and long red hair over his face. He dressed in the garb of a Japanese monk along with prayer beads which have a skull on it.

As a boy, Genkaku was a peace-loving young man who felt no hate or anger for the horrible apprentice monks that abused him. He even provided for an injured kitten, showing his compassion for others.

As an adult, Genkaku initially appears to be a laid-back, irreverent, and blasphemous man at first glance. However, this exterior masks an extremely brutal, impulsive, spontaneous, and violent personality and an frighteningly unstable mind. He is very sarcastic, blunt, sadistic, manipulative, and traitorous. He is shown to take pleasure in killing his enemies. He believes that life is nothing but pain and misery and that death is the only salvation, even smiling before his presumed death at the hands of Nagi and Ganta.

Azuma showed a laid-back personality with an irreverent attitude at a first glance but this masked a brutal, highly violent psychotic mind. He was impulsive and prone to excessive violence when he let out his true nature. Gankaku tended to be blunt, sarcastic and sadistic with him holding a psychotic grin whenever he was fighting or killing someone.

He believed that death was the only true salvation for all beings and thought that he was performing a service for other people. Part of his reasoning for this approach was that life was full of pain and that individuals suffering from such pain wanted to be relieved from this torture. He compared it to how wounded suffering animals were put down and believed that the same approach should be adopted with human beings. This meant that he saw himself giving a service in preventing individuals from suffering from fear or oppression and the other burdens of life. Such was his devotion to this task that he asked that if someone would be as kind enough to him as he was to others in saving them through death. As such, he did not fear dying and in fact welcomed it as he smiled when it looked like he was going to be killed by Ganta's Branch of Sin attack.

Powers and abilities

Azuma Genkaku was born an ordinary human being with no special abilities though one who came to train at a Buddhist Temple.

As a member of the Undertakers, Genkaku had no special abilities and was in fact an ordinary human being. However, he was equipped with the Worm Eater technology that allowed him to neutralize the special abilities of a Deadman's Branch of Sin. This allowed him to make ordinary attacks by such users harmless to him as it turned to simple blood. The Worm Eater itself was equipped with a skull that he wore around his neck. Whilst normally stopping a Branch of Sin user, powerful supersonic attacks by such Deadman were able to pierce through the protective effects of the Worm Eater and destroy the skull amulet leaving Genkaku completely powerless against such foes.

He was the leader of the Undertakers (墓守, Andāteikā) who were an Anti-Deadmen Corps that served as a special force created by Tsunenaga Tamaki.
