History

Bane Stones were the fragments of the souls of nine-tailed foxes and were artifacts of great spiritual power. Those that possessed them were noted to be consumed by the hated that emanated from the stones and become dangerous phantoms. As a result of the danger, certain exorcist groups made it their mission to find such jewels in order to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. Japanese families that specialized in exorcisms were able to tap into the power of the stones by casting seals on them in order to prevent them from corrupting their user. Such clans had the potential of tapping into the crystals and use them in the binding of powerful spiritual beasts. A noted family was the Tsuchimiya clan who had used a small fragment of the stone that had sealing treatment placed on it to prevent it from corrupting its user. With this stone, a select powerful member of the family was able to use it to continue to use the powerful Spiritual Beast Ga-Rei Byakuei as the powerful Spirit Eater would otherwise run rampant and kill everyone within its path.

In the modern age, Kazuhiro Mitogawa was given a shard of pure Bane Stone that was intended to be transported from the Vatican to Japan but instead used them to make himself into a malevolent spirit where he intended to resurrect his mother. He began searching for worthy hosts to such stones and to be their wielders with such individuals being those that had intense feelings of hatred. During his time in Japan, his stone would appear as a singularity on spirit energy sensors and its power attracted the presence of numerous phantoms that targeted the civilian population. He would witness the actions of the Supernatural Disaster Countermeasures Division in combating these spirits and was responsible for killing Kagura Tsuchimiya's mother. Afterwards, he would kill Mei Isayama as he sensed dark emotions of envy and ambition within her with this hatred making her a potential worthy host for the Bane Stone. Following her death, her life was returned to her by the Bane Stone where her jealously of Yomi Isayama saw her secretly killing Naraku Isayama thus usurping the family from Yomi who was his intended heir. Eventually, Mei would bring Yomi to a set site where she intended to kill her and revealed the truth of her adopted father's death. During the confrontation, Yomi learnt of Mei's true nature and killed her for the death of Naraku. When departing the scene, she encountered Kazuhiro Mitogawa who crippled her body as he saw hatred within her making her an excellent wielder for the Bane Stone and a better host compared to Mei. Whilst crippled, Yomi was left in the hospital where she was believed to had murdered Mei without knowing the truth of Naraku's death and as a result her status as head of the Isayama was removed whilst her engagement to Noriyuki Izuna was broken as a result. In despair, her hatred ignited and Mitogawa approached her where he healed her body with the stone thus transforming her into its new host as well as becoming a malevolent spirit.

Overview

These artifacts were the crystalized forms of pure supernatural energy and those granted one were effectively given limitless spirit power. However, this came at a price as the stone devoured the soul of the wielder and turned them into a phantom. This led to them being synchronized with the nine-tailed foxes hatred whereupon their host seeks to destroy everything in existence. Notable changes occurred in the individual's personality as the stone fed on their emotions leading to them become more violent and aggressive. Only during periods of non-conflict can the host reflect on their actions and lament them. Any attempt to kill themselves was prevented by the stone that seemingly stopped their hosts from any self-injury. Phantoms were shown to be attracted to the power of the Bane Stones with a great number of paranormal disturbances emerging in a given area as a result of the artifacts presence.

A notable trait within the stones was that they aided in the recovery of their user and healed any injuries including fatal ones. These saw such wounds close up straight away and be repaired allowing the wielder to operate without any impediment. Certain exorcist families were able to use small fragments of the stones and placing sealing magic treatment in order for an individual to make use of them. Such stones like the regular ones were embedded into the skin where they helped in recovering from injury and a greater ability to control captured Spiritual Beasts. However, as they were small fragments and subject to sealing treatment, their capacity to heal wounds was much reduced and took longer to repair such injuries. As a result, a critically wounded host was capable of dying despite the efforts of the stone in their possession.

Notes

  • The Bane Stones are named after the mythological Japanese Sessho-seki (Killing Stone) that are the transformed corpse of Tamamo no Mae.
