History

Batarians are a humanoid species that evolved in the current cycle of the Milky Way Galaxy where they developed on the planet Khar'shan.

In the aftermath of the Alpha Relay's destruction, the Reapers entered into the galaxy through the Vular System at the heart of Batarian territory leading to them quickly advancing on their homeworld. The Batarian response was uncoordinated with this due to their recovery of a Reaper corpse known as the Leviathan of Dis in 2163 CE from Jartar. Their government had hid the existence of the find as they had hoped to reverse engineer the entity in order to give them an advantage against their rivals in the galaxy. However, contact with the Leviathan led to the science teams being suffering the effects of Indoctrination with even Batarian officials succumbing to this during visits to the site. Thus, by the time the Reapers invaded the galaxy, the indoctrinated officials came to sabotage the Hegemony's defences and broadcast misleading messages allowing for an easy conquest of Batarian space. Captured Batarians then were converted by the Reapers into hordes of Cannibals that were dispatched on numerous battlefields across the galaxy. Meanwhile, Hegemony space saw the Batarian race depart their space as refugees where they sought safety in alien territory with a number even taking shelter at the Citadel.
