Biography

James "Jimmy" Santini

The young boy accompanied his father on a business trip where they were investigating possible illegal chemical dumping in the Carisbad Caverns. He came to be separated from his father and became lost in he caves for sometime. This forced the boy to eat and drink whatever he could find with this including filthy phosphorescent water that tasted like metal. He came to be rescued but by the time he was home his body came to mutate into a humanoid bat-like creature. This caused his mother to call him a demon and resulted in him running running away from home where he fled all the way to New York City as he looked for food and a place to hide. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #2) He came to be distrustful of people especially doctors who tried to take him prisoner and lock him up with drugs being used on him. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #7)

Spider-Man had struck up a friendship with Batwing after their fist meeting, bringing him much needed food and companionship. Spider-Man brought Jimmy some more food, and then offered to get Reed Richards to help cure him. Jimmy, however, was naturally afraid of people, due to the mistreatment he'd suffered from "normal" people like Cherryh, and ran away at the suggestion. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #7) Spider-Man found his old scientist friend Curt Connors, and asked him to use his expertise to help cure Batwing. However, an accident in the lab caused Connors' alter ego, the villainous Lizard to emerge, and he battled and defeated Spider-Man before fleeing into the sewers. Spider-Man managed to re-create an antidote for Connors, and, along with Batwing, traveled into the sewers to find and cure him. Batwing aided Spidey in locating, reasoning with, and finally returning Connors to his human form. Connors felt sympathy for the boy, possibly due to his own young son's suffering with cancer, or just basic human compassion, and offered to help him. The pair were seen leaving New York atop a train, to search for a safe place where they could search for a cure in peace. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #9) While attempting to cure Jimmy, Dr. Connors failed, and Jimmy reverted to his Batwing persona. Batwing returned to New York, and engaged Spider-Man in another battle. Spidey, of course, was unwilling to hurt him, but Jimmy, having lost his father and been rejected by his mother, wanted to die. Breaking away, Spider-Man tracked down Jimmy's mother, and convinced her that Jimmy was still her son, mutant or not, and that she was wrong to reject him. Just as Batwing was about to be shot down by the NYPD, Mrs. Santini intervened, telling her son that she still loved him. On hearing this, and realizing that he was loved, Jimmy reverted to his human form, and the police backed off. Jimmy went home with his mother, finally receiving the love he had needed so badly. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #24)

Overview

Personality and attributes

By the time he was mutated, he was said to had been no more than 12 or 13 years old and being younger than Spider-Man. He came to operate under the name of Batwing on account of his bat-like appearance. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #2)

After his transformation, he was initially distrustful of people where he came to believe everyone hated him and wanted to hurt him. He claimed that he only wanted food in order to survive and to be left alone. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #2)

Powers and abilities

Originally, Santini was an ordinary human boy until exposure to illegal chemicals dumped in a cave that mixed with water that he drank. This resulted in his mutation where he became a humanoid bat-like creature with leathery wings underneath his arms and clawed hands. These traits gave him the power of flight and he had greater than human strength. (Untold Tales of Spider-Man v1 #2)
