History

Origin

Belle Reve

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. The original Belle Reve penitentiary was built by French architects during the American Civil War. It served as a place to house the most dangerous criminals but not the insane as it served as a prison for the functional criminals with many bounty hunters bringing their targets to it. (Suicide Squad v4 #26)

Five years ago, the rise of superheroes on the planet saw the nation’s greatest scientists rebuilding Belle Reve entirely. It was designed to deal with the modern criminal and contain some of the worst of humanity that consisted of powerful beings. (Suicide Squad v4 #26)

After acquiring the Heart of Darkness, Maxwell Lord used the power of Eclipso to take control over the Justice League and place them under his command. In the resultant battle, a section of Belle Reve was destroyed whilst the mind controlled League sought to take over the world. Despite the damage to the prison, Flagg and others managed to ensure that the remaining prisoners were kept contained. (Justice League Vs. Suicide Squad v1 #5)
