History

The Pym Experimental Penitentiary Number One that was an entire prison shrunken to miniature size with it being also known as the Big House. It was a creation of Hank Pym who during the design stage had shown them to Jennifer Walters at some point. In time, it came to house a large number of supervillain criminals such as the Mad Thinker. (She-Hulk v1 #5) Following her fight with the New Warriors, the fifteen year old Southpaw was defeated and ended up being incarcerated at the Big House. This saw Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg and Holliway representing her with Mr. Holliway questioning the legality of shrinking a prisoner under the grounds of 'right to height'. During her imprisonment, Southpaw met up with Mad Thinker who enlisted her aid as he engineered a prison escape. After successfully escaping, the villains ended up fighting She-Hulk and Henry Pym only to end up defeated and returned to their cells. (She-Hulk v1 #5) Afterwards, the prison was reconstructed with Dr. Pym supervising the project where it was deemed as Pym Experimental Prison Number Two though he came to refer to it as the Lang Memorial Penitentiary. Among its newest prisoners that were shrunken in size was Titania. (She-Hulk v1 #12)

It was said that the Big House was facing investigation over the legalities of shrinking prisoners down with Pym Particles. (Fantastic Four: Foes v1 #2)

Overview

In appearance, the prison was a large facility that actually contained the true prison inside that consisted of shrunken prison cells. It was based on the plans of Hank Pym who referred to it as Pym Experimental Penitentiary Number One. (She-Hulk v1 #5) It was rebuilt where it was designated as Pym Experimental Penitentiary Number Two though was later renamed the Lang Memorial Penitentiary. (She-Hulk v1 #12)

Both the in-mates and the prison facilities were shrunken down making it cost effective as it required cheap clothing, food, and housing along with minimal staff. In this state, even escaped prisoners were not dangerous as they remained in their miniature state. (She-Hulk v1 #5)

The reconstructed prison came to use ants a prison guards with these being controlled by copies of Ant-Man's helmet. (She-Hulk v1 #12)

In other media

Television

  • In Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Big House made an appearance in the animated series. It was one of the four major supervillain prisons and is used to store genetically-altered supervillains. In "The Man in the Anthill," Whirlwind ended up incarcerated at the Big House after being defeated by Wasp. Other inmates featured were Arnim Zola, Grey Gargoyle, Mad Thinker, Mandrill, Constrictor, Griffin, Red Ghost and his Super-Apes, and King Cobra. When Whirlwind ended up overriding the power dampener on him, he attacked the Ultron-like guards to prove a point to the inmates only to learn the hard way why they call the prison the Big House when he ended up pinned down by Ant-Man's finger. Mad Thinker later mentioned to Whirlwind that when the systems break down, every supervillain in the four major supervillain prisons would be free. This eventually happened in "The Breakout," when all four super-prisons were attacked and sustain massive breakouts. Not only did the inmates get free, the Big House also grew in size to the point it damageed the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier that it was on.
