Biography
Bill Cipher was an inter-dimensional being that inhabited the universe where it was said that he originated trillions of years ago in the second dimension. Over time, he came to despise living there where he describing it as a dimension of flat minds in a flat world with flat dreams. In time, he came to 'liberated' his dimension by plunging it into burning chaos, along with everyone he had ever known, including his own parents. Eventually, he took over a boiling, shifting intergalactic foam between dimensions: a lawless, unstable crawlspace known as the Nightmare Realm. Unfortunately, the Nightmare Realm's lawlessness and lack of any consistent physics or rules meant that it was fated to collapse into itself eventually. After coming to learn of a prophecy that stated he would merge the Nightmare Realm with the third dimension, Bill started coming into contact with humans to accomplish this goal.
Bill once asked a local shaman named Modoc the Wise to build an interdimensional gateway to the Nightmare Realm, but the result was made out of twigs. When Modoc learned of the prophecy that foretold of an apocalyptic event that would stem from interactions with Bill Cipher, he committed suicide by setting himself on fire in an effort to avert it. The natives eventually discovered a way to defeat Bill by using a zodiac with ten symbols. They left behind elaborate cave paintings about their encounter with the demon, including how to summon him, and more importantly, a warning never to read the incantation that would summon Bill aloud. The valley was deemed a "cursed land" by the natives, who evacuated around 1000 AD.
In the late twentieth century, a young man named Stanford Pines, who had spent the past six years investigating the town's plethora of unnatural creatures and oddities, hit a roadblock in his research and was left without answers as to how the improbabilities of Gravity Falls had come to be. During the roadblock, he uncovered the ancient cave containing the ancients' stories of Bill Cipher. Heedless of the warnings, Ford repeated the incantation aloud, summoning Bill into his mindscape. Bill recognized Ford's brilliant but cocky and insecure nature, and his near-friendlessness as ideal conditions for manipulation, choosing to introduce himself to Ford as a muse who chose one brilliant mind every century to inspire. It was Bill who revealed to Ford that Gravity Falls' weirdness was caused by a rift between dimensions, through which the other side's weirdness leaked through. With Bill's assistance, Stanford drafted blueprints to create an inter-dimensional gateway beneath his home (later becoming the Mystery Shack) and recruited his college friend Fiddleford McGucket for assistance. As Bill and Ford's partnership seemingly grew to friendship, Ford seemed to develop an obsession with Bill's powers, collecting triangular memorabilia such as rugs and statues, modeling his home's architecture in his image, converting his private study into a place of worship. He even allowed the demon to enter his mind; this, along with the amount of information he seemed to simply produce on the spot, made Fiddleford increasingly uneasy of the portal and of Ford's mysterious collaborator, as Ford never mentioned Bill's identity to his partner.
Bill Cipher manifested in the deep woods of Gravity Falls after Gideon Gleeful utilized an ancient incantation from an arcane journal to summon him into the mortal realm. Upon crossing over as a glowing, floating, triangular dream demon, Bill Cipher established a business transaction with Gideon, agreeing to infiltrate the subconscious mindscape of Stanford Pines to steal a private safe combination in exchange for an unrevealed future favor from the boy. He demonstrated his anomalous, reality-bending capabilities during the meeting by telekinetically pulling a mouthful of teeth directly out of a living deer and presenting them to Gideon before transitioning into the dream realm. Once inside the memory landscape, Bill Cipher easily bypassed the defensive efforts of Dipper Pines, Mabel Pines, and Soos Alzamirano, manipulating the environment to exploit their personal fears and effortlessly outmatching their tactical capabilities. He located the requested memory folder containing the safe code, but his grasp on the data was severed when Mabel used a mental manifestation technique to blast the folder out of his hands, causing a deep-seated rage that morphed his triangular chassis into a stark, furious red hue. Bill Cipher subsequently engaged the children in direct mental combat, manifesting physical nightmares until Dipper discovered that the mindscape allowed human thoughts to conjure tangible reality weapons. Confronted by the unified, fully armed siblings, Bill Cipher ultimately chose to concede the engagement, reverting to his calm, yellow demeanor and warning the intruders of an impending global apocalypse before seamlessly vanishing from the mindscape. Bill Cipher reappeared to exploit the extreme mental exhaustion of Dipper Pines, who had spent several sleepless nights trying to bypass a passcode lockout on a high-tech laptop. Manifesting within a localized dreamscape while Dipper rested his eyes, Bill Cipher offered to provide the correct password to the device in exchange for a single puppet from Mabel Pines’ upcoming theatrical production. Dipper accepted the transaction, prompting Bill Cipher to manifest a blazing blue flame to seal the contract, only to immediately reveal that his chosen puppet was actually Dipper’s biological vessel. Bill Cipher forcefully extracted Dipper’s soul from his body and initiated a hostile physical possession, turning the boy into a hollow ghost while he assumed control of the physical shell to find and destroy the laptop to prevent the children from discovering his history. Operating within Dipper's body, Bill Cipher traveled to the local theatre where Mabel was hosting her puppet show, masquerading as Dipper while searching for the hidden device. His presence was exposed when Dipper’s ghost successfully communicated with Mabel using a hollow sock puppet, prompting Mabel to actively defend the laptop from the entity. Bill Cipher engaged Mabel in a physical struggle on the theatre stage, but his operational capacity was heavily impaired by the severe physical exhaustion and localized pain of Dipper’s neglected human body. Mabel utilized this physical vulnerability to tickle the vessel, inducing a violent sensory overload that forcefully expelled Bill Cipher’s conscious essence out of the physical body. Reverting to his ethereal, triangular state, Bill Cipher furiously declared that the physical setbacks were meaningless and promised a future reckoning before completely destroying Mabel's stage puppets and shattering his consciousness away into the void. Personality and attributes
In appearance, Bill Cipher was a one-eyed, triangular entity resembling the design on the back of the U.S. dollar bill’s pyramid. He was yellow in color, with a single large eye, a thin black bowtie, stick-like limbs, and a top hat. His triangular body often glowed, and he could change size at will, growing to enormous proportions during Weirdmageddon or shrinking to a tiny form for mockery. He frequently surrounded himself with fiery auras, glowing sigils, or surreal distortions of reality whenever he manifested.
Bill Cipher was sadistic, unpredictable, and manipulative. He enjoyed mocking mortals, referring to them with dismissive nicknames while taunting their fears and insecurities. Bill was an expert dealmaker, preferring to bargain with victims to gain entry into their minds or control over their bodies, though he always twisted agreements for his own amusement. His sense of humor was cruel, relying on pranks that caused pain or terror, and his ambitions were limitless, desiring to expand his chaotic dominion across dimensions. He carried himself with theatrical flair, cracking jokes, singing, and dancing while causing devastation.
Cipher was a cunning, blasphemous, eccentric, sadistic, psychopathic and physically irreverent demon who finds most things amusing, particularly if they cause distress or harm to others. He is outrageous and outlandish, as well as a quick talker and thinker. Though he may come across as simply annoying, he shouldn't be underestimated; for when he is angered, he is a force to be reckoned with as he will unleash his near-omnipotent powers on those unfortunate enough to make him angry. When accused of being insane, Bill proudly agrees with the statement. He is also shown to be somewhat obnoxious, as seen when he makes his presence known to Dipper when the latter is trying to figure out a password within a limited amount of time. occasionally, his voice tumbles to a lower pitch (usually when emphasizing a statement).
Powers and abilities
Bill Cipher belonged to a species of higher-dimensional dream demons, which meant that on a basic feats level, he possessed absolute mastery over mind invasion, telepathy, and dreamscape manipulation. He was an exceptional member of this extra-dimensional collective, capable of breaching the mental barriers of physical entities once summoned through a specific incantation. Within a subconscious mind or dreamscape, Bill Cipher could warp reality at will, change color palettes, manifest physical objects from thoughts, and alter his own size, shape, and arm count instantly. He possessed the innate power to fire destructive blue energy blasts from his fingers, read an individual's memories like a book, and project images directly from his eye. Bill Cipher had no biological vulnerabilities to physical weapons, human diseases, or conventional environmental hazards, making him completely immune to physical harm while inside the mindscape. Despite these vast mental powers, Bill Cipher was restricted by a strict physiological framework: he was a purely non-physical entity who could not directly manipulate the physical world without first establishing a conscious mind-possession contract with a willing mortal host, and his absolute control over a dreamscape could be actively countered by individuals who learned to weaponize their own imagination against him.
In powers, Bill Cipher commanded vast reality-warping abilities. Within dreams, he could reshape the environment, conjure beings, and manipulate memory. In the physical world during Weirdmageddon, he demonstrated full control over matter and space, fusing creatures into abominations, bending landscapes into impossible shapes, and spawning his army of monsters. He could possess human hosts, as seen with Dipper, and survive attacks that would normally obliterate physical beings. His influence was so strong that even when trapped within the mindscape, he could project visions, manipulate events indirectly, and maintain cult-like followers who worked toward his return.
Another one of Bill's traits is that he is quite manipulative. Bill can flatter others, deceiving them by promising them anything. He can go as far as to make deals with them only to betray them at the end. Bill once did it with Dipper on how he sacrificed everything to make Mabel happy but never returns the favor, trapped Mabel in a dream that contains her desires, he even tricked Ford Pines and Gideon, with the former admitting he lied and the latter being a skilled deceiver himself.
He came to be described as being a dream demon. Bill's most noticeable traits is his power to manipulate the laws of reality. Bill can transform organic matter, disorient the physical world, and cause a ripple in the space-time continuum. After breaking the Nightmare Realm, Bill's powers grew stronger to the point where he can manipulate reality on a cosmic scale. Bill can repair himself if he gets injured, such as his form, his limbs, and his eye. However, he stated it takes an hour for his eye to regrow.
Once within the trance, or within someone's mindscape, Bill's powers are vastly magnified; he becomes capable of changing his appearance, changing the appearance of other people's dream selves, and changing the area at will. He can also pluck information from any others who are also inside and bring those ideas and images to life, as was the case with Xyler and Craz being summoned in Stan's mind as he is proving this to Mabel, Dipper, and Soos. Bill can communicate with his summoner using his body as the screen of a video phone; he can also use his whole body as a projector, displaying past and future events as live video footage.
Physically, he was unable to enter into the third dimension unless he was summoned there. Thus, typically, he had to rely on encountering denizens of that plane through dreams.
One of Bill's most noticeable abilities is that he can make a contract with someone to give the said person who made a deal with him fame, power, or a request. Bill's hand becomes surrounded in a blue flame and, once the person exchanges a handshake, while the flame does not harm the person, the deal will be sealed. However, once the deal is sealed, Bill will want something in return that often ends up in his twisted methods. If the person breaks the deal, Bill's powers won't have any effects on them, as Gideon broke his deal when Bill failed to get the combination for the safe. Also, making deals is the only way Bill's powers could have an effect but only to the ones who made a deal with him. Bill makes a deal with someone, he can enter their dreams.
He came to rule an unstable crawlspace with this lawless dimension known as the Nightmare Realm. However, its very laws meant that it would eventually collapse on itself unless it was merged with another dimension.
