History
The Black Acolytes were an organization formed in the aftermath of the Extermination War that decimated the human race in the early part of the 21st century. Despite the deaths made at the hands of humans, there were some among mankind that came to worship the Archangel Gabriel. These humans would operate in secret cells in many of the major cities where they were opposed by the Church of the Savior.
After it was revealed that Alex Lannon was the Chosen One, William Whele went to an isolated diner in order to meet the Archangel Gabriel. Upon learning of this development, he ordered William to strengthen his Acolytes and prepare them. (Episode: Broken Places)
Overview
It consisted of fervent believers that believed strength came through suffering. They formed clandestine sleeper cells that operated in nearly all major cities within the Cradle. Members were identified by their signature blindfolds with open eyes stained on the inside. These 'eyes' were said to represent those of Gabriel with it being rumored that he can see through the eyes of all those that served him.
Masks worn by the Black Acolytes encompassed around the eyes and had eyes painted on them. New members were inducted whereby the congregation wore their masks whilst the lead priest espoused words of worship towards Gabriel. In that moment, the new inductee had a golden cloth thread round around their waist whereupon it was tightened until the person faced intense pain. This was the symbolism that the Black Acolytes were broken and reborn into the cult. (Episode: Broken Places)
