Biography

Black Beetle schemes in Booster Gold v2 #24.

Black Beetle was a male humanoid who was equipped with the powers of a Reach Scarab. (Booster Gold v2 #6)

Mister Mind approached him about joining the ranks of the Time Stealers where he promised to eliminate Jaime Reyes for him. This involved rescuing Ted Kord from the timestream thus preventing his death which would have stopped Reyes from ever becoming Blue Beetle. Black Beetle felt that this would prevent his love from ever joining Reyes and dying in the process. (Booster Gold v2 #10)

He claimed to be an inhabitant of the 27th century who had come back in time to save the life of Ted Kord. (Booster Gold v2 #6)

Overview

Personality and attributes

One account had his real name being referred to as Joshua. (Booster Gold v2 #7) Wielding a Scarab, he came to refer to himself as the Black Beetle. (Booster Gold v2 #10)

Though claiming to be from the 27th century, this was in fact a lie and he said anything as part of his misdirection against others. (Booster Gold v2 #21)

He considered himself to be Jaime Reyes greatest enemy. Black Beetle's enmity with Reyes stemmed from the death of a loved one where he attributed the blame on Jaime. (Booster Gold v2 #10)

He was shown as being a member of a group of time-travelling villains known as the Time Stealers. (Booster Gold v2 #7)

Notes

  • Black Beetle was created by Geoff Johns, Jeff Katz and Dan Jurgens where he made his first appearance in Booster Gold v2 #5 (February, 2008)
  • In an interview, Matthew Sturges commented on the character, "No, he’s an entirely new character the Geoff Johns created for Booster Gold, so he has no legacy. He’s very much about the future, and what’s GOING to happen. That’s something I really like about him. So much of the Blue Beetle ethos is anchored in the past, it’s nice to see a new piece of it evolving from the other direction."

Television

  • In Young Justice, the character appeared as a villain in the animated television series where he was voiced by actor Kevin Grevioux. He was shown as an unnamed member of the Reach that wore a Reach Scarab with his race being the Partners of the Light as well as being the Competitor of the Kroloteans. The character was named the Black Beetle by Wonder Girl. His silhouette was seen in "Salvage" when both he and Sportsmaster were watching Superboy with Blue Beetle fought the Appellaxian Golem that was created by Intergang members Bruno Mannheim and Whisper A'Daire. The two heroes managed to subdue the Golem and attempted to reason with it but Black Beetle secretly destroyed the creature with a sonic blast at a distance. Sportsmaster later reported to Black Beetle that Mannheim and A'Daire were rendered into a catatonic state to serve as a warning to anyone that opposed the Light. In "Before the Dawn", the character was fully seen when the Team tracked down their missing members of a Reach starship underwater. During that moment, he was discussing with the Reach Ambassador and Reach Scientist about the status of the Scarab on Jamie Reyes. Black Beetle advocated rebooting the Scarab but this would require another host since it would require killing the host Jamie Reyes. The captured Metahumans were all later freed by the Team battled the Black Beetle during a brief fight where he nearly overwhelmed them until he fought Blue Beetle. Their fight was ended abruptly when Shimmer's power accidently ruptured the hull of the ship causing water to flood the chamber. This interrupted the battle with Blue Beetle blasted out of the ship and allowed the Team to rescue the captive test subjects. Black Beetle managed to recover Shimmer and closed the hull before more of the ship was flooded. He later took control of the Reach operation from the Ambassador by evoking an article of the Planetary Acquisition Regulations after the Reach's plans for Earth were publically unveiled. This saw him initiate a doomsday act to destroy Earth to prevent their activities from being shown to the Green Lantern Corps. He was later ambushed by the Team where he managed to destroy Green Beetle's Scarab but his own Scarab was destroyed by Blue Beetle. Despite its death, the host survived and was aboard the Reach ship that were being escorted to Oa to stand trial before the Guardians of the Universe.
