History

Pre-Crisis

The Blackhawk Squadron

Many of their members were from nations conquered by the Nazi's with them seeing their loved ones murdered that hardened their resolve. Whilst operating, they developed a bad reputation to people on the European continent with them being regarded as air pirates and assassins. This was because few were aware of the origins or objectives of the group thus thinking they were mercenaries. (Military Comics v1 #2)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Blackhawk Express began to operate exclusively for the D.E.O. where they helped in transporting Metahumans and related materials. (JSA v1 #12)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

The Blackhawks Program was initiated by the U.N. as a military unit tasked with handling dangerous threats in the world. (Blackhawks v1 #1)

Their first recorded mission was a covert operation to Kazakhstan, where their secrecy was compromised by civilian photographers. These photos wound up on the Internet, which sparked the attention of the United Nations. Furthermore, one of their operatives Kunoichi was bitten by an enemy soldier and when she returned to the Eyrie, she found she had been infected with 'nanocites', that granted her super-strength. The nanocites were designed by Mother Machine, a techno-organic being herself, who used the technology to destroy a meta-human detainment facility in Asia. (Blackhawks v1 #1) When Lady Blackhawk led a team to investigate the prison's destruction, they were met by one of Mother Machine's ruthless operatives, Titus. Titus promptly sliced off Irishman's arm before being subdued by Kunoichi and Lady Blackhawk. But in the process, Kunoichi was exposed as having been infected. At the same time Blackhawks Canada and Wildman were kidnapped and taken to the Mother's hidden city. (Blackhawks v1 #2) The two learned that Mother Machine's technology was far more advanced than anything they had experienced and offered by the entity into joining her. The Eyrie was later compromised by Titus, who escaped, and was defeated by Kunoichi. (Blackhawks v1 #3) Canada and Wildman rejected Mother Machine's proposal and escaped into Mother Machine's own satellite in orbit, where they hatched an impossible plan to save themselves. (Blackhawks v1 #4) When Mother sent it falling to Earth, they used its 'kinetic harpoon' to destroy her own facility on Earth. The Blackhawks operatives were then safely extracted by Lady Blackhawk. (Blackhawks v1 #5)

Overview

During World War II, they consisted of the last of the free men of the conquered countries who fought for freedom of man rather than for money or politics. (Military Comics v1 #2) By the modern day, they were a kind of covert anti-apocalyptic team. (Dark Nights: Metal v1 #1)

Each member of the Squadron was considered an expert in their field. Their tragic pasts had made them hard and bitter men but that this aided them on their missions. They tended to sing a number of songs for their efforts during World War II to boost their spirits. As a unit, they were highly precise in their movements with them giving secret signals to one another on their tactics. (Military Comics v1 #2)

The Squadron had with them numerous vehicles and aircraft for their use with them being skilled and fearsome fighters in them. (Military Comics v1 #2)

They had their own island headquarters that were known as Blackhawk Island which contained facilities allowing them to defend themselves and had numerous vehicles available. (Military Comics v1 #1) The group once maintained their headquarters at a site known as the Eyrie. (Blackhawks v1 #1)
