Biography
Robert Dobalina was a cowardly young man, Bob was persuaded into joining the criminal organization Hydra by his wife, Allison Dobalina, who accused him of not being able to hold a steady job. The thought of a stable career with a dental plan also appealed to Bob, though he was disappointed to find out Hydra does not offer full dental like A.I.M.. During Deadpool's assault on a Pakistan Hydra Base, he ran into Bob and coerced him into helping him. Bob was hesitant, as Hydra would not allow him back into the organization after having betrayed them, but Deadpool, four inches tall at the time, tortured him with a security card until he relented. He then forced Bob to fly them to safety in one of Hydra jets, though Bob did not know how to pilot an aircraft. (Cable & Deadpool v1 #38)
Terrified but unable to refuse, Bob followed Deadpool out of HYDRA headquarters and became his reluctant companion, assistant, and occasional accomplice. Despite his constant fear, Bob displayed surprising adaptability—using his limited training and bureaucratic knowledge of HYDRA to assist Deadpool in navigating both combat and covert missions. Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Bob was an average, unremarkable man of medium build, often clad in the standard green-and-yellow HYDRA uniform, complete with the organization’s insignia. His costume appeared ill-fitting and slightly shabby, reinforcing his status as a background grunt rather than an elite agent. Beneath the mask, Bob was depicted with a worried expression, receding hairline, and perpetually anxious eyes. (Cable & Deadpool v1 #39)
Unlike the fanatical agents who devoted themselves to HYDRA’s vision of global domination, Bob had joined primarily for the practical benefits the organization offered, including steady pay, dental insurance, and job security. (Cable & Deadpool v1 #38)
Bob’s personality was defined by cowardice, loyalty born of fear, and a surprising sense of decency. He was deeply nonviolent by nature, preferring to run or hide rather than fight. Yet his friendship with Deadpool brought out moments of unexpected bravery—albeit usually by accident or necessity. He admired Deadpool despite his frequent abuse and manipulation, often rationalizing their chaotic partnership as preferable to the authoritarian cruelty of HYDRA. His naïve optimism and moral discomfort made him a rare sympathetic presence in Deadpool’s violent orbit, serving as both comic foil and moral compass when the mercenary’s antics grew too extreme.
