Biography

Bondrewd (Japanese: ボンドルド, Hepburn: Bondorudo) was a male human whose history was largely unknown. At some point in the past, Bondrewd was responsible for some unclear criminal offense in a foreign country and a bounty was placed on his head. Regardless, he became a Delver and engaged in any activities that could fund his research into the Abyss. Among his actions included selling drugs that resulted from human experiments, illegally selling Artifacts, and supplying secrets. Some bounty hunters would show up to claim his head, but each would disappear. Eventually, no one would approach him out of fear. Later, in the past fifteen years, he obtained a Special Grade Artifact called the Zoaholic, and used it to spread his consciousness to multiple bodies, creating the Umbra Hands. Ten years ago, he was able to establish a forward operating base within the ruins of the 5th Layer of the Ido Front. When he became a White Whistle Delver, he used his original body as the material to create his Life-reverberating Stone, his white whistle, effectively becoming his own whistle. During one of his experiments researching the Curse of the Abyss, Bondrewd offered children who wanted to unravel the secrets of The Abyssto come with him to the Ido Front. However, he never told them openly that they were going to be used as test subjects. Among the children were Nanachi and Mitty. As Bondrewd continued testing, more and more children were used up in his experiments until only Nanachi and Mitty were left. On his final test, he used both of them, resulting in Mitty being hit with the Curse of the Abyss, while Nanachi received the Blessing. At an unknown point, he began to raise the orphaned child of an Umbra Hand who had survived a Transportation Vessel failure. This child he came to raise as his own daughter where he was responsible for naming her Prushka.

Bondrewd continued to utilize Nanachi as an assistant in in his experiments until Nanachi escaped Ido Front with Mitty, being unable to bear the torturous existence of being in the White Whistle's care. After Mitty was killed, Bondrewd was shown acknowledging her death for which he congratulated Nanachi. Bondrewd had been expecting that Riko, Reg, and Nanachi would arrive at Ido Front and welcomes them, informed them how the 6th Layer can be reached, and invited them to rest at the Ido Front. Later on, he meets with Nanachi during the night and asks them to work for him again, to which they agree on the condition that Reg and Riko will not be hurt. However, it was too late, as Bondrewd has already ordered his Umbra Hands to examine Reg's body. After the three escape, he follows them with a few of his Umbra Hands. However they have been led into a trap by the trio and are attacked by Stingerheads. Only Bondrewd survives the attack with his Sparagmos, but is taken care of by a clever strategy of Nanachi and Reg resulting in him being shot by an arrow containing Amaranthine-Deceptor larvae fired by Riko, exposed to the curse, as well crushed by Reg with a boulder. Prushka, who had observed with an Umbra Hand, starts crying over the state Bondrewd is in. However, due to Zoaholic, Bondrewd has already transplanted his consciousness into the present Umbra Hand and takes the title of Bondrewd once again with the swap of his helmet. Prushka was overjoyed with relief that Bondrewd was not dead, but he knocked her out with his finger to make it easier to carry her back. Before Reg can attack again, he hits Riko with Curse Needles and invited them to visit him again before he returns to Ido Front. In his new body, he puts Prushka into a cartridge, knowing her love and devotion to him will give him the Blessing if he tries to ascend. Indeed, when he fights Reg again, Bondrewd ascends from the Miniature Garden of Dawn and is able to receive the Blessing because of Prushka. After his second defeat, his consciousness once again transfers into one of his Umbra Hands, though this time, he lets Riko, Reg, and Nanachi go, now accompanied by Meinya and Prushka, who was now in the form of a Life Reverberating Stone.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Bondrewd was a tall man sporting mostly black clothing, with a long coat and a suit. He came to be known by a number of titles that included the Lord of Dawn and as the Sovereign of Dawn. He always covers his face with a black helmet which includes a gap in the middle where violet light shines through. His second body also has a lizard-like tail, which originates from the Artifact Third Works.

He was a man who valued knowledge above else, even in the wake of whatever moral issues that may occur from his actions. He is willing to sacrifice anyone and everyone in the pursuit of it, not out of malice but because he feels it is necessary to prepare for the end of the 2,000-year cycle. He remembered the names of each of the individuals he had sacrificed.

He had no sense of ethics, going so far as to use small children for his research. He moved them around various areas of the abyss as a way to test the various effects of the Curse on the human body.

Bondrewd never showed hostility to those he faces. Rather, he praised them if they manage to best him.

Despite his methods, he is quite a capable father.

Bondrewd raised Prushka as his daughter and, being the only person she could rely on, she loves him very much. Bondrewd also loves her as his daughter, but is also willing to sacrifice her in his pursuit of knowledge, not out of malice but because he feels that they need to be prepared for whatever will come and will still be able to reach the dawn together like this. Even after Bondrewd made her into one of his cartridges their bond remained.

All Umbra Hands work under Bondrewd of their own free will, some even being former bounty hunters who came after him.

Powers and abilities

Bondrewd was noted to had originally been an ordinary human being.

Bondrewd has an unknown Artifact that allows him to view events through others.

In order to sustain his energy by combating the Curse of the Abyss, Bondrewd created specialized packages made from the flesh and essence of humans who are the easiest to transport and would not be missed. For portability, only the brain and vital organs of children are used. The Curse was deflected away from Bondrewd and onto the child in the cartridge instead. A cocktail of drugs was also used to induce a state of ecstasy and terror in the cartridge to boost the Curse-combating efficiency. Bondrewd is able to avoid the loss of humanity from ascending in the 6th Layer and instead receive the Blessing of the Abyss.

A key item in his possession was the Zoaholic (ゾアホリック, Zoahorikku) that was a Special Grade Artifact referred to as a Soul-Slave Machine. A horrifying Artifact capable of planting the soul of the user into another, taking control of them. The soul that has been planted can also be shared among those others. Simply being touched with it was enough to have a soul planted into oneself, and it is nigh impossible to escape the enchantment. The user and the subject don't necessarily have to be humans, because when it was first discovered, small animals were manipulating small insects into getting eaten. Humans are incapable of enduring the division of their consciousness by it. After a period of time post usage, their consciousness will eventually disperse, making them crippled. Bondrewd divided his soul between each of his Umbra Hands prior to the events of the story. When he was killed by the Curse, his consciousness transferred into one of their bodies, who then take on his helmet as a symbolic gesture. Bondrewd's consciousness seemed to had been altered to something that was no longer human as a result of repeated duplication, reflecting his transformation upon receiving the Blessing.

He came to be a cave raider that looked to explore the Abyss thus becoming one of the Delvers (探窟たんくつ家か, Tankutsu-ka). Due to his skill and expertise, he came to be among the elite White Whistles that were held as the greatest of Delvers. His White Whistle is sculpted into the shape of two hands clasped together and was activated by rubbing instead of blowing into it, as it would be impractical to use while wearing his mask.

The Umbra Hands (祈手アンブラハンズ, Praying Hands?) were a group of Delvers that served Bondrewd. All members of the Umbra Hands are Black Whistle Delvers to whom Bondrewd has spread his consciousness to via the Zoaholic.

Bondrewd maintained a base deep within the Abyss with this being the Ido Front (前線基地イドフロント, Forward Operating Base?). This was a research station located at the bottom of the 5th Layer said to be the deepest point where a person could go and still survive the the Curse of the Abyss. It was the place where White Whistle Delvers begin their Last Dive.
