The Book of Eternity is an artifact that features in DC Comics.

History

The Eternity Book was a fabled mystical tome that was said to had once belonged to Merlin's father. (JLA Annual v1 #4)

During the Fall of Camelot, Merlin gave a fragment of the Eternity Book to Etrigan with the page guiding him to his true destiny in case he was bound to a human host. (Swamp Thing v2 #87)

In 1566, the wizard Merlin took the guise of an adviser named Merloch where he provided counsel to Suleiman the Magnificent. Around this time, his demonic half-brother Etrigan had pursued the sorcerer to the lands of Turkey to claim the book with an army of demons with him intending to use the tome to rule the world. The Turks battled the demons with Merloch revealing his true nature to Suleiman who aided Merlin by preventing the book from falling into the hands of the demon Etrigan. Beneath an ancient Roman temple in Turkey, the book was buried alongside Suleiman's scimitar with a spell cast to protect them across the centuries. (JLA Annual v1 #4)

In 1999, an earthquake befell the Ankara region in Turkey opening the chamber that held the book and blade. At the time, the Red Crescent was on the scene with Doctor Selma Tolon looking to save people. She uncovered the collapsed underground section where she found the spell book. After reading the scripture, she was transformed into the superhero known as Janissary. With the powers of the book, she operated as a hero in Turkey where she foiled numerous plots to bring Turkey to ruin. Around this time, Etrigan emerged where he allied with a Turkish General to get his aid in claiming the Eternity Book. (JLA Annual v1 #4)

Overview

Its contents were spells that allowed an individual to conquer the world. One spell turned individuals into a flock of birds. (JLA Annual v1 #4)

Branding discs were referenced within the pages of the Eternity Book. (Trinity v1 #9) It was known to contain information on the Holy Grail and the means for a person to return to their own time. (Swamp Thing v2 #97)

Notes

  • The Eternity Book was created by Jack Kirby where it made its first appearance in The Demon v1 #1 (August, 1972).
  • In the JLA/Avengers crossover, the Book of Eternity was one of the 12 items of power searched for by the heroes.

Video games

  • In Infinite Crisis, the Eternity Book was a purchasable artifact in the MOBA video game that could be bought by a player Champions. According to the description, it included details of all past events and also of those in the future.
