The Bookman clan is a large-scale clan which has members everywhere, and they come together to support the Bookman as the clan's leader by paying for things such as travel expenses, so the leader can focus on their logs. These members need to conceal their Bookman lineage and outwardly lead a normal life, though the reason for hiding their affiliation with the Bookman clan is currently unknown. Later, it would be revealed that there are numerous members of the clan all around the world, recording the important events of the world as they happen or gathering information and accounts from people who have witnessed them. This being their main duty aside from supporting their clan head. As stated, clan members hide their allegiances to the Bookman clan even from each other, ending up with clan members even fighting against each other on the opposite sides of wars and conflict. With it being clarified that they resort to such means due this ensuring that the “logs” and “records” that these members record are unbiased towards the side their working with. Clan members also enjoy gathering history and information not recorded in books, as shown where they paid a homeless veteran to share stories of wars he had participated in during his youth as a high-ranking soldier. As revealed when Allen, Johnny and Link met with two of its members, the clan’s sole focus is the gathering of knowledge and are typically unbothered by actual events unfolding in the world, only truly involving themselves when the time to record history is near.
Their goal was recording and maintaining the true hidden history of the world. According to this, it was vital for them to stay unbiased at all times and remain completely neutral. This was because when recording history, even the slightest bias could taint information. As a direct result of this requirement, many other rules had been formed to prevent bias. The foremost of these rules was the prohibition of any attachments or affections. Another consequence of this was that friendships were deemed to be forbidden. An extension of this required neutrality was that the Bookman Clan do not choose sides in wars. They will, however, form temporary alliances with one or both sides of a conflict in order to gain a more detailed record of war and in return may provide information and/or their skills as warriors. The Bookman Clan must not interfere with the events of history and act only as observers. In the event that a Bookman allies with one side of a conflict, it appears that only information and battle support is provided under particular circumstances.
When someone takes up the role of Bookman Junior, they have to change their name every time they change the place of their log. The name they take on at the time will become the name of the log.
In order to provide a detailed and accurate description of the world's history, it was a requirement for the Bookman to possess an eidetic memory.
Bookman were shown to be able to speak a language others around them could not understand.
