Biography

Origin

Brother Blood in New Teen Titans v1 #22.

Brother Blood was the name and title passed around to several males of the family line for several centuries. Around seven hundred years earlier, a priest from the nation of Zandia named Brother Sebastian killed a fellow priest in order to acquire possession of what he believed was Christ's prayer shawl. Upon gaining possession of it, the shawl afforded him invulnerability and increased his lifespan by reducing his aging. However, the dying priest he had murdered cursed Brother Sebastian with it being said that his own son would kill him upon his hundredth birthday. Afterwards, Brother Sebastian would have a son and on his hundredth birthday the curse came to pass whereby his offspring would murder him whereupon the child would take the mantle of Brother Blood. Thus, the family line continued for generations over the next seven centuries whereby each Brother Blood would rise to ascendance by killing their father and taking their mantle only to be slain by their own son on their hundredth birthday.

Modern

Teen Titans defeated by Brother Blood in Teen Titans v3 #10.

The body of the former Brother Blood was then dumped from a plane out at sea where fish ate the remains that washed up ashore on a beach in Oregon. (Teen Titans v3 #10)

An adult Blood manged to escape from his incarceration and was opposed by Kid Eternity. The fight between the two brought them to Titans Tower, where Blood fought the Titans. After draining Red Devil's powers, Blood realized that he had tainted himself with Neron's influence and fled the battle. He was later seen approaching an unknown woman, looking to make her his new mother. (Teen Titans v3 #67)

As part of his plan, he had a million sleeper agents spread across the world with these consisting unwilling agents or cult members of the Church of Blood with them being part of Operation Merytamon. They could be activated at any moment by Brother Blood who tasked them with stealing a million children from maternity wards to be brought to the cult. (Outsiders v3 #5)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Brother Blood and his cult captured the Ravagers who were on the run from N.O.W.H.E.R.E. Their capture led him to study Beast Boy where he learnt of his link to the Red. The Ravagers would later manage to escape from Brother Blood and his Church of Blood.

Afterwards, he would make contact with one of the members of the Parliament of Limbs who empowered Brother Blood as his champion with the goal of usurping the Kingdom of the Red. As a result, Blood would become the benefactor of the Splinterfolk and gain entry into the Red where his power allowed the King of Limbs to slay his fellows in the Parliament of Limbs. Brother Blood would be tasked with killing Maxine Baker in order to eliminate any threat but Animal Man would enter into the kingdom to defeat both villains from usurping the Red. Once obtaining blood from Beast Boy and Animal Man, Blood opened a portal into The Red, and revealed he was in a traitorous partnership with one of a totem of the Red. He was eventually stopped and banished from the Red with joint efforts by Maxine and Buddy Baker. (Animal Man v2 #28)

Television

  • In Teen Titans, Brother Blood appeared as the main antagonist of the animated television series third season where he was voiced by actor John DiMaggio.
In an interview, producer/writer David Slack wrote on this version of the character: "In the end, we tried to make him the anti-Slade. Where Slade hides in the shadows, Brother Blood loves the spotlight. Slade always has some ulterior motive, Brother Blood will tell you what he's planning right away. So there's some contrast there. We weren't even sure we'd get to use that name. I think what was important that we kept was that he was the leader of a cult. We kept that role and drew inspiration from cult leaders we read about. They are very charming seeming people. From that, we gave him this sort of 'power of temptation' – this ability to control people's perceptions. And the power of persuasion. We didn't get too deep into the character from the comics, because so much of it was so outside of what we'd be able to do. He's definitely one where we've strayed more".
  • In Arrow, Sebastian Blood appeared in the live-action television series second season of the Arrowverse where he was portrayed by actor Kevin Alejandro.
