History

The Brujeria were a secret society of male witches that had existed for centuries in the forests of Patagonia at the southernmost tip of South America. It was claimed that they had already owned the Earth and had done so for centuries. Their goal was to assault Heaven itself in order to destroy it. (Swamp Thing v2 #46)

Using their influence, they forced the dark mystical forces to rise to the surface around the world. Each incident increased the general belief in the paranormal by degrees thus saturating the whole psychic atmosphere. It was the belief in power that the Brujeria intended to use in order to accomplish their monstrous goals. (Swamp Thing v2 #46)

Overview

They were described as being evil, poisonous, murdering bastards. (Swamp Thing v2 #46)

Newly inducted members if selected to join the Brujeria were required to go through the initiation rite that involved standing under the waterfall of the Thraiguen River for forty days and nights. The purpose of this ritual was to apparently wash away the effects of a Christian baptism. Following that, they had to catch a skull thrown from their instructor from the crown of a tricorn hat. This was followed by them killing their best friend to show that they were completely without compassion. The recruit was then required to sign a document with blood from their own veins. The Brujeria made their waistcoats by flaying the skin from the breast from a recently disinterred Christian corpse. As human fat was phosphorescent, their waistcoats glowed in the dark allowing them to be seen during their processions. (Swamp Thing v2 #46)

Their leadership was known as the Council of the Cave with this central committee residing in Chiloe. A servant of the Brujeria was the Invunche who were the Guardian of the Cave and sent to eliminate their enemies. They were created by taking a six month old baby with the transformation involving disjointing the arms, legs and hands. (Swamp Thing v2 #46)
