Captain America fought Herr Kleiser throughout the European theater with his photographer friend Bucky Barnes. On his final mission, he destroyed the Chitauri nuclear missile that was en-route to the United States, falling into the Atlantic Ocean and left frozen in suspended animation. Six decades later, Captain America woke to a future he hardly recognized. Rogers became depressed over the fact that most people he knew were dead and Bucky had married his former girlfriend Gail. He agreed to lead the Avengers to protect America, though he believed himself unable to handle the team and even retired after a failed mission only to return when the Chitauri attack the Triskelion.
