Biography

Thasanee Rappaccini was the daughter of the brilliant scientist Monica Rappaccini who headed Advanced Idea Mechanics. Born on the island nation of Madripoor, she was genetically created by Advanced Idea Mechanics, under the control of her own biological progenitor, Scientist Supreme Monica Rappaccini. Part of a plan to engineer super-humans with the ability of resisting contamination and radioactive disasters from a global plague intended to collapse industrial society to nuclear fallout, her true origins were kept a secret from her as she was adopted by undercover A.I.M. agents, Julia Black and Tim Black. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #10) Despite issues concerning her situation as an adopted child, Carmilla Black enjoyed a relatively ordinary life as a popular teenager in Vermont, until her poisoning abilities kicked in when she was sixteen at the night of her homecoming. Her mutated arm first released a highly concentrated dosage of toxins, instantly killing her boyfriend Greg through skin contact. Scared of the social and legal backlash she would suffer, she fled her small hometown, living a nomadic life on the streets and surviving however she could. This experience led her to better control the properties of her toxic arm, which she named as the 'Stinger'. Three years later, after learning through the media her adoptive parents had been murdered, Carmilla Black returned home. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #7)

When investigating her parents' demise, she found her original birth certificate. Before processing the revelation of being from Madripoor, she was targeted by A.I.M. agents, who had killed her adoptive parents to bring her out in the open again. The commotion was interrupted by a S.H.I.E.L.D. division led by Derek Khanata, who shared information he had about her true origins as well as provided her with a device created by Noriko Nagayoshi, which would help her control the Stinger. Recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. under the codename Scorpion, Black was sent to Madripoor in a mission to investigate Monica Rappaccini's actions. Scorpion had Agent Anya Sareva as her handler. In her way to Madripoor, she started to date the good-looking playboy Troy Goddard. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #7) Infiltrating the orphanage from which she had been taken, Scorpion found evidence there were others who shared a similar fate than hers. Moreover, she found a group of enslaved children. Going against Khanata's orders, she broke the hostages free and entered combat with the captors. Knocked out by a lethal dose of relaxants, Carmilla Black was able to survive the ordeal due to her abilities. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #8)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Carmilla Black was depicted as a young woman with dark hair cut into a short, sharp style, pale skin, and striking features that reflected her hybrid heritage. When suited as Scorpion, she wore a black bodysuit accented with green highlights, with a mechanical tail attached to the back of her armor that could function as both a whip and a striking weapon. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #10)

Carmilla was characterized by defiance and independence. Her early experiences—discovering her lethal powers, being hunted, and learning her true heritage—made her wary of trusting authority, whether from S.H.I.E.L.D. or A.I.M. She demonstrated a rebellious streak, unwilling to be used as a pawn, while also grappling with guilt over the accidental death her powers caused. Beneath her hardened exterior, she possessed a drive to define her own identity and to fight against being controlled. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #8)

Powers and abilities

Carmilla was a human genetically engineered by A.I.M. Her defining ability was her 'toxin touch', a unique biochemical mutation that allowed her to exude a lethal toxin through her skin, capable of killing or incapacitating victims upon contact. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #7)

In combat, she combined this natural power with advanced training in hand-to-hand combat provided by S.H.I.E.L.D., making her a skilled operative. Her Scorpion armor provided durability and offense, with its mechanical tail serving as a weapon to strike or ensnare enemies. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #10)

Notes

  • Carmilla Black was created by Fred Van Lente and Leonard Kirk where she made her first appearance in Amazing Fantasy v2 #7 (June, 2005).
  • In an interview, creator Fred Van Lente commented about the characters creation namely that she was originally supposed to be the daughter of Viper and Silver Samurai, "Mark [Paniccia] wanted the new Scorpion to be a teenage girl superspy with a stinging touch, and because I wanted to tie her in to the larger Marvel Universe, I came up with the idea of an adopted girl who discovers that she’s illegitimate daughter of venerable villains and frequent partners-in-crime, Viper and the Silver Samurai. I figure V&SS got drunk one night in Madripoor or something, hooked up in their hotel room, and the new Scorpion was the result. The Scorpion’s stinging arm would be a combination of Viper’s venom powers and the Silver Samurai’s energy-field mutant ability." After creating her, he received a call from Marvel stating that he could not use Viper or Silver Samurai at the time but a hallmark of this was her green hair that indicated the creators origin intended for her.
