Arnold Casey Jones

Casey Jones grew up in Brooklyn, a neighborhood in New York City, which is not exactly known for its safe environment. When Jones was young, his father, Herb, owned an auto shop. A group of Purple Dragons members (lead by a young Hun) burned the shop down, killed him and took his wife and daughter hostage. The badly beaten Casey refuses to lie down and takes Hun’s blows. He attacks Hun with a knife, stabbing him in the neck. Enraged, Hun beats him to within an inch of his life. It seems that the beating he took from Hun as a teenager resulted in several mental and emotional disorders, explaining his often violent and erratic behavior. He had no friends and spent his spare time watching the programs on his three televisions, which he ran at the same time and eroded his rational thinking skills over time. Enticed by role models from diverse action television series', Casey decided to do away with the "scum and dirtballs" of the streets. After he had equipped himself with a hockey mask and various sports clubs, he began his vigilante campaign.

Raphael runs into Casey beating some muggers and proceeds to stop him before the crooks are murdered. Jones and Raphael fight several times before making peace with each other and helped each other to take down a group of muggers.

As a youth, Casey looked up to his father despite him being a boorish, sexist, violent, anger-prone lout. The elder Jones was under the thumb of the Purple Dragons, and refused to pay up, a decision that Casey did not find to be the most efficient. His father would pay one way or another, though, as the Purple Dragons destroyed his business. The Purple Dragons insisted Casey tell his father to pay up, but Casey was determined to protect his father, and attacked their leader, Hun. This got Casey beaten so bad he suffered brain damage. Casey never saw his father again and reasoned that he had to be dead, since he'd never leave Casey and his mom. His mother left to find him, and never returned either; Casey was sure she was also dead.

Casey Jones was a young college scholarship holder. Upon his mother's death by cancer, his father became an alcoholic thug who would vent his daily frustration on his son.

Upon his mother's death by cancer, his father became an alcoholic thug who would vent his daily frustration by beating his son. Casey did not fight back, due to a promise he had made his mother. On one such occasion, Casey was saved by Raphael, who at the time was a street vagrant with no memory of his past or his family. The two quickly became fast friends and fellow vigilantes.

When Raphael was reunited with his brothers and their father Splinter, Casey gained them as friends as well. He and Raphael would regularly patrol the streets of Brooklyn in search of crime to punish, which is where they first stumbled across the Foot Clan mutant Alopex.

Around this time, Casey met April O'Neil, who wanted to take self-defense classes from him after her traumatic experiences at StockGen Research. After he learned the reason for it, and that her experiences were in connection, with his new friends, he brought her back into contact with the Turtles, sparking another important friendship for them.

However, Casey's home life remained turbulent, and after his father beat him once again, Splinter declared that Casey would live with them from now on. However, his proximity to the Turtles led to far more serious injuries in the City Fall arc, where he was stabbed in the stomach by Shredder. He was rushed to the hospital by his friends and recovered, but they were forced to leave behind Leonardo to save his life. It was during this period that the growing feelings he had for April became a full-blown relationship.

However, Casey's relationship with his father was irrevocably broken after this event, with his father's return to his old life as Hun, leader of the Purple Dragons, and follower of Shredder. Hun attempted to convince Casey to either leave New York or join up with the Shredder, but when Casey refused to do either, his father attempted to kill him. Fortunately, he was saved by his old friend Angel Bridge.

He accompanied April and the Turtles to Northampton, presenting himself to April's parents as her boyfriend for the first time. They were very accepting of him, and he later accepted an offer to work at the Second Time Around store.

However, neighborhood security patrols brought him into conflict with the Purple Dragons again, as well as bringing a drunken Hun back into contact with Casey. When Hun and the Dragons attacked the Second Time Around store, Casey fought Hun while Angel, Alopex and local residents fought against the Dragons.

Notes

  • Casey Jones was created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird where he made his first appearance in Raphael: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle v1 #1 (April, 1985).
  • On Screen Junkies, Eastman commented on the characters creation, "I had this idea; it was kind of a parody of all these vigilante characters that were in comics. You have the classics like Batman and Daredevil and all these characters where something tragic happened in their past that helped them choose the path to go out and fight crime on their own, and I thought it was really funny if we had a character who was inspired to do the same, but just from watching too much bad TV, like "TJ Hooker" and "A-Team" and all that stuff. So I came up with the idea of this character who would be called Casey Jones and he would have two bats as his main weapon, and he would wear a hockey mask and sweats – just something he cobbled together. And at the last minute, Pete said, "Well why don’t you give him a golf bag and he’ll have all kinds of weapons in it?" And I’m like, "Dude, that’s it!" But that’s the kind of collaboration we had; it was always that kind of spontaneity, and how so many of the characters came together. But Casey and Raphael – they’re fun. And they’re a little retarded like me [laughs]."
