History
Whilst searching for his lost people, Thor instead discovered relics from the realm eternal with among these being the Casket of Ancient Winters which he took to the Avengers Mansion leading to it being cared for Edwin Jarvis. (Avengers v3 #5)
Eric Vellis was entrusted with the Casket of Ancient Winters and had to go into hiding to protect it from those that desired its powers. (Loki: Agent of Asgard v1 #15)

Notes
- The Casket of Ancient Winters was created by Walt Simonson where it made its first appearance in Thor v1 #346 (August 1984).
Alternate Versions
- In the Mutant X reality, Iceman was affected by the Casket's power but unlike in the main universe he was permanently stricken with its effects. As a result, he could not touch another entity without freezing them instantly.
- In JLA/Avengers, the Casket was deemed as one of six items of immense power that represented the Marvel Universe.
In other media
Television
- In Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, it appeared in the animated series in the episode "The Casket of Ancient Winters". For unknown reasons, it was hidden in a cave in Norway when a disguised Malekith led a group of travelers to uncover it. After taking possession of it, the Enchantress and the Executioner arrived in order to claim it for Loki who had freed Malekith. However, Malekith betrayed the pair and unleashed the power of the Casket of Ancient Winters intending to engulf Earth in ice in order to bring back the dead Dark Elves to make it their new home whilst separating Midgard from the Nine Realms. He was defeated after being confronted by Iron Man, Thor and Black Panther but the three were temporarily incapacitated by the now freed Enchantress who took the Casket through a portal with her.

- In Thor, it was part of the plotline in the movie that was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Video games
- In Marvel Heroes, the Casket of Ancient Winters was a legendary item available to the player in the MMORPG. The description called an ancient Asgardian artifact that contained the Fimbulwinter of Ymir holding the fury of a thousand killing winters.
